Sayonara, Spring…it’s Summer Time!

And… I can’t really believe it. How it’s already (mid) June is literally beyond me. Life has been SO busy (and yet, so good)  and I’ve seemed to let the blog slide as I’ve been going through my days these past few months.

To sum these past few months up… things around the Happy Tales household have been pretty damn good (minus some apartment flooding and a wiped out computer hard drive, but I’ll get into that more later!).

I finished off my Spring semester of grad school with a trip up to UNC for a mandatory weekend Leadership seminar and started my 1st Summer session less than a week later, which leads me to now. No summer break for this girl! In fact, I haven’t had a summer off from hittin’ the books since Summer 2009. Ah, well, I am SO close to graduating with my MPH that I am beyond motivated to push through ‘til December.

It’s crazy to think that Summer Session I ends this coming Sunday… I’ve been knee deep in my AIDS policy course  since the beginning of May and I’m sad to see it coming to an end. It’s a great class, especially with my experience of giving support care services to those living with HIV ands AIDS during my year with the Americorps right after college.

No worries, though. Summer Session II starts up just a few days after my AIDS course ends and I’ll be starting all of my research for my master’s paper (a paper I’ll write in the Fall in order to graduate). On top of the course work and the research, I am also spending both summer sessions completing a 140 hour practicum — basically a fancy word for ‘internship’ — all the while working full-time. Now I’m sure you see why the blog has fallen to the wayside, things have been quite busy!

And they won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

Come August, I’ll take my final two courses and complete my comprehensive exams in early October (someone hold me), turn in my masters paper in November, and if all goes well, I’ll finish my final two courses and graduate in December!

Whew.

There sure is a lot to be said working your way through grad school – it really is a tough balance. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes to plan. If not, it won’t be the end of the world — I’ll just tack on an extra semester (Spring ‘13) and complete whatever needs to be done. I’d really like to not have to do that, though, as I’ll be gearing up for our wedding at that point!

My “new” job is still the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’m pretty much swimming along on my own now, and the fulfillment I get out of each of my days fills me with so much happiness. I can genuinely say I’ve never been happier in my entire life, and I think a great part of that is due to the people I surround myself with at my job, and of course, the donors I get to work with each day. I really can’t get over the miracles we make happen – the timelines and events leading up to  successful bone marrow donation are so fragile — it truly amazes me that we make it happen time and time again. I have the best job ever, hands down.

These past few months also had some craziness thrown in as well. Like the time when the pipes burst in the apartment above us at 3:30 in the morning (right during my week of finals, mind you). At first I thought I was dreaming, but several minutes of the blaring fire alarm and the overhead sprinklers going off brought me to my senses and made me realize that the water rushing into our apartment from the ceiling above us was, indeed, real life.  (I also realized during this time that Lasik eye surgery is on the top of my list of things to treat myself to once I gradate grad school and can start saving money again – fumbling around to quickly find my glasses during a chaotic situation is not ideal!).

Turns out there was no fire, so a true disaster was thankfully averted. The property manager who runs our apartment complex was beyond amazing. They were at our door within minutes helping out with the buckets of water gushing through our air vents. Yep, that’s right – water was literally rushing through our air vents. Our master closet and storage room (and master bathroom) were all soaked! Thankfully my other half is Mr. Positive in all situations and helped me make light of the situation, even while it was happening (I also think the ridiculousness of the 3:30AM timing allowed us to laugh through it all as well). We’re just so thankful our complex wasn’t experiencing a real fire, and lucky for us, nothing major was ruined. Another thing? Do not underestimate the importance of renters insurance.

Another hiccup I ran into in May was when my hard drive crashed. I’ve had my Sony Vaio for 2 years, and I LOVE the damn thing. So when I randomly got a “S.M.A.R.T. failure” message while trying to boot it up one day and couldn’t figure out what was wrong, I was perplexed and took it into Best Buy to see if they could figure it out.

The Geek Squad said the messages I was receiving while trying to boot up my computer meant that my hard drive had already been wiped, and if I wanted to retrieve my data, they’d have to send off my computer to Atlanta (and I’d have to spend an arm and a leg in order to retrieve the data). Not being financially prepared to do that, I decided not to go that route. I asked around work if anyone knew of any computer-savvy people, and unfortunately, no one had any connections. The next day, one of my coworkers  (who had not been in the office the day before) said she heard about my situation and had already spoke to her husband – a man who’s owned his own computer company for 30+ years – and he was willing to take a look at my computer and see if he could fix the problem.

I know I’ve said this before, but I can’t reiterate how amazing my coworkers are and how much they feel like family to me – always helping each other out. Needless to say, I took my coworker and her husband up on their offer, and my data files were all able to be saved off my hard drive. Talk about a relief – we’re talkin’ ALL of my grad school documents, data, notes, etc… from the past 2+ years I’ve been in the program, (and of course, all of my pictures!).

On top of that? He fixed my computer! So not only did I not have to pay major $$$ to the Best Buy Geek Squad, but I also did not have to purchase a new laptop. My coworker and her husband are my heroes. And I am one fortunate girl.

The lesson I learned from this all of this? Always, ALWAYS, back up your data. Your hard drive can get corrupted, even if your laptop is only 2 years old.

Other things?

Ah yes, I am in need of a few surgeries (as is Ryan), but I’ll save those musings for another time. Let’s just go ahead and dub this summer as the “summer of surgeries” — next summer will hopefully be the summer of more pleasant things – like, you know, getting married.

So, I figure this post is getting way too wordy, so I might as well throw in some pictures. I mean hey, it wouldn’t be a worthy blogpost without a gazillion pictures from the past few months now, would it?

Let’s rewind all the way back to mid-March…

IMG_7257

My parents drove through Charlotte in mid-March on their way from Florida to Ohio. I had a blast with my mom (as always) and we picked up some fun things from Michaels to use for crafting. (Although, because I’ve been so swamped, I didn’t actually get to crafting until the end of May… I am only human, after all!). My mom wasn’t feeling her best during their time with us so we hung around the apartment and caught up before going out to dinner at a  yummy Italian restaurant.

IMG_7270

Happy Girl, the one and only

Later in March, Ryan and I went to see Martin Sexton in concert (second time for me, eleven times for Ryan).

IMG_7380

This guy is Ryan’s all-time favorite artist and I’ve grown to really enjoy his music as well.

One of Martin Sexton’s trademark songs, “Black Sheep”

And of course, more soccer time happened.

We celebrated Easter at home here in Charlotte, just like last year, and had another “Easter Carrot Hunt” for Happy.

It’s funny, we don’t think she remembered the hunt from last year, because it literally took her ALL day to find them.

I am so OVER this.

After the (not so successful) hunt, we went for our annual Easter walk around the lake at Freedom Park

FREEDOMMMM!

We get stared at a lot.

I kid you not, Happy walks on her back hind legs to start off the majority of all of our walks. That girl is just LOVES the all of the sites and smells of the outdoors. It’s quite the site to see, and always makes me laugh.

And my parents drove through Charlotte once again, this time over Mother’s Day weekend! This was the first Mother’s Day I got to spend with my mom since I was in high school – 8 years ago (geez, how has it been 8 years since HS already??).

They stayed for two days instead of their usual one. Typically, my parents drive in at night, enjoy a dinner out with us, and then leave the next morning to continue their drive. But not this time! Lucky for us, they took their time getting back to Ohio from Florida and we made sure to make the most of it.

My mom was feeling good this time around, so we spent the day out doing girly things and shopping around while the guys hung out and watched golf and soccer (their two favorite sports).

IMG_7568

My mom and I on Mother’s Day – she’s on the phone with my sister, Molly!

I LOVE having quality time with my mom. She’s got the best personality and such an infectious laugh. I’m so grateful they decided to spend two days with us.

IMG_7570

They even stopped by my workplace when they finally left to head back to Ohio Monday morning. I think it’s so neat that two of my “families” got to meet each other – really meant a lot to me.

Ryan and I are hoping to drive up to Cincinnati over Labor Day weekend so we can spend some time with my parents again (and catch up with family/friends we haven’t seen in what feels like forever!).

Other trips we have planned for the summer? A weekend in Arkansas to visit with Ryan’s family, and of course, some “stay-cations” to take care of all of the surgeries. But I’ll dive into that more at another time.

Reasons to Smile

Two and a half years ago today– I remember it like yesterday. It was a very, very special day.

It was at this time that Ryan and I spent our first Christmas holiday together, down on Sanibel Island with my parents.

It was two and a half years ago today that I woke Ryan up at 6AM, draaaagged him outta bed… and convinced him to help me haul an armload of blankets to the beach to watch the sunrise.

Turn that frown, upside-down, son! It's BEACHTIME!

He has *no idea* what’s about to come…

Well, well, well... what's that you got there, Ry?!

And now, some background… When I met Ryan back in October of 2008, he was pretty much head over heels for me.  Me on the other hand… not so much. I was super busy with my stint in the AmeriCorps, working 3+ jobs so I could afford rent, and commuting 2+ hours a day back and forth to South Carolina for work. Let’s just say I didn’t exactly have a lot of time to invest in a relationship (…or so I thought).

But then I started to see that Ryan wasn’t just the typical guy.

He would leave me funny messages and come up with fun weekend plans. He’d pop over to my house on weeknights just to say hi, knowing that I’d be kicking him out after an hour or two so I could get my beauty sleep. I made it clear to him that I just “wanted to be friends” at first. I wanted to test the waters, and see what he was all about. And he honored that. And that’s what did me in and made me fall for him – the fact that he was patient, and gave me time.

Nevertheless, Ryan still snuck in some smooth moves. The instance that stands out most is the time he showed up on my doorstep, bouquet of flowers in hand, minutes after landing in Charlotte after a weekend spent in Arkansas. He hadn’t even gone home yet to drop off his things, and there he was… on my doorstep. With flowers. Because he wanted to say “hi.” That’s the moment I knew I had fallen for him. And that’s the moment I let me guard down, and finally let someone in after years of trying to protect myself from pain and hurt. I realized this guy meant businesses, and for once, I liked being “courted.”

Anywho, not long after I met Ryan, I realized he was big into coffee-table books. One day around Thanksgiving we were chillaxin’ at a local bookstore and he picked up “Life – the Classic Collection” and started flipping through. I could tell right away that he loved it, as it’s not every day an actual *book* grabs his attention. (Sorry, Ry…but you know it’s true.) Granted, this “book” is the size of my torso and has hundreds of pages filled with pictures of the world’s greatest events/people, and mini descriptions of said pictures. This coffee-table book got my wheels turning… and soon enough, I had *the* perfect idea for what I wanted to give Ryan for Christmas. So, I bought the coffee-table book, and went to work putting my own little twist on it.

DSCF4516

The book

So what’s so special about this coffee-table book? Ohhhh nothing really, except for the fact that I crafted about 40 personalized pages and “hid” them in between the book’s pages for Ryan to come across while flipping through the pages. I selected meaningful pictures from things we had done together and events that had taken place during the first two months we had known each other. I even wrote little captions for each picture to match the layout of the original pages.  To say I was pleased with how it turned out…is a major understatement. I was so excited to give this glamorized picture-book to him that I could hardly stand it!

Here are some pictures of me putting the final touches on it…

DSCF4509

Putting the pages in place

DSCF4519

Final Product!

It was two and a half years ago today, that Ryan and I became “official.” The last page I created for the book showcased the silhouette of a couple sitting on the beach, watching the sunrise. (Coincidence? That’s for you to decide Smile with tongue out). The caption to this picture was a few lyrics from the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Myraz. (Go ahead, call me a cheeseball, corndog, what have you… I know it’s true. And I love it). I’m pretty sure Ryan figured out what I was saying (he may not be big into reading books, but he sure knows how to read between the lines!), and I know that gift gave him a big reason to smile.

DSCF4640

Where it all happened (giiiiityerheadouttathegutter)

DSCF4694

Officially official

Oh, but the reasons for smiling don’t end there.

Yep, I’ve got even more reasons to share!

A year ago this past weekend, Ryan and I officially began our lives together under one roof. That’s right folks, I moved in. And no, there was no ring on my finger.  Judge me if you want, but I wouldn’t have made that step if I wasn’t positive that he is my “forever.”

Nothing screams “girl” quite like blue, printed quilts and decorative pillows…

So yes, a year ago this past weekend… I began the best year of my life. (So far, at least).

http://images.bookbyte.com/isbn.aspx?isbn=9780848731052

Cue: Oprah

Not only did I move in with Ryan one year ago, but I resigned from a financial development position that wasn’t making me happy. As a result I threw myself headfirst into my graduate school courses and health educator position at the Y. I’m tellin’ ya, whoever said, “if you find a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” is soSoSO right. Being a health educator does not feel like work, and I love every second of it.

But that’s not all I’m smiling about. I’ve also accomplished some feats that I am very proud of. In addition to working a job I love, I also achieved my dream of being accepted into the nations 2nd best School of Public Health– UNC-Chapel Hill’s Master of Public Health Public Health Leadership Program.

IMG_0866

"I got it from my momma!" No really, she surprised me with this hat in May.

Because of all of my hard work this past year, I am now ahead of the curve by one year and have now entered into my second year of classes. It’s a great feeling. (And yes, I am still in the midst of my first epidemiology exam that is due on Wednesday, so this statement holds a lot of clout!).

So, what else did I smile about this past year?

Oh you know, that whole marathon thing…

IMG_0631

The pigs flew...

My experience running The Flying Pig Marathon was simply *amazing.* I loved the race, the people and the course (my hometown!)…and I even enjoyed that lame-o flat-tire that grounded us for a little bit (still laughing about that, actually). What’s more is the fact that I liked the training just as much! I know it sounds crazy, but I actually miss those longruns. I think the mentality I had throughout my training played a huge part in why I was so successful. I can’t wait to begin training for marathon numero dos– Savannah Rock N’ Roll!

Yep. All of those things have made this past year absolutely wonderful. But there is oneeee more thing that happened this past year that has changed my life for the better.

DSCF2439

Little Miss HappyTales!

Adopting this little wee one.

Seriously y’all. I cannot image my life without her. It was fate that we randomly decided to go visit the shelter “just to play” with the pups (famous last words…). The love I have for my little pupsqueak is something I’ve never felt before. (Good lord, if I feel this way about a furbaby, I can’t even imagine the feelings I’ll have that’ll stem from having actual human babies).

So yes, the little Happster is most definitely the icing on the cake, if you will. And how appropriate… considering the fact that today is her 1st birthday!

DSCF2355

Birthday!? I’m one??? What is a “one”?

WHAT DOES THIS BIRTHDAY NONSENSE EVEN MEAN?!?!

(Make sure to check back this coming Sunday to see the celebrations…hopefully there won’t be any more choking on cupcakes like the last doggie-birthday celebration that went down…).

So yes, as you can see, this past year has brought me many reasons to smile. And my guess is that there are many more “best years of my life” to come. I can’t wait to see what’s in store. Especially with these two knuckleheads by my side.

DSCF2758

Don’t let their innocent looks fool you…

IMG_1147

We’re all smiles

Hold up. I lied. There’s actually one more thing that has made a significant impact on my smile-o-meter this past  year. And that’s this blog. That’s right. Creating this blog has given me 100,000,000 reasons to smile. I am soooo glad that I randomly decided to start this baby back during the New Year. I can’t believe the people I have come across in blogworld, and I seriously cherish every person who has commented, emailed, tweeted, and/or facebooked me telling me how much they enjoy reading.  Seriously, nothing puts a smile on my face more than hearing from you guys!

What are some things that make you smile? Has anything exciting happened to you over the past year? Did you/do you “live in sin” with your significant other? Do you think of your furbabies as real children?

Marathon: The Aftermath

I’m sure by now you all are tired of my marathon talk, but in all honesty, this was *such* a big accomplishment for me, so I want to make sure and capture it all! In the case you missed previous recaps, here are the most recent Marathon Posts:

So where did I leave off? Ah yes, the finish line!

*Marathoner!*

After I met up with Ryan, Happs and Kathy, we made our way back to the car. They parked about a 15 minute walk away, and it felt good to keep my legs moving. Like I said before, the only “pain” I felt was muscle soreness in my quads. Strangely enough, my calves felt fine, and the soreness I experienced wasn’t really any different from the soreness I felt from one of my long-runs during training.

Once we got to the car I stretched myself out in the backseat and got to using the stick! Seriously, that baby is one of the best pieces of exercise equipment out there. I also had some bites of a protein-bar they were handing out at the finish, drank some good ‘ole H2o  and ate part of an apple. It’s weird, but whenever I finish a long-run, my appetite is usually missing for a few hours. My reasoning is it’s because all of my blood is flowing to my muscles rather than my stomach. Regardless, though, I made sure to get some food in me to replenish my glycogen stores.

I called my mom during the car ride home and I could just feel her beaming smile reaching out to me through the phone.  I can’t wait to show her my medal when she and Gerry come into town on Saturday! I also called my dad and told him the big news, and he was quite excited for me as well.

Once home, we gave Happs some water and I made my way to the kitchen to figure out what to eat. I didn’t have an appetite quite yet, but I forced down some Great Harvest Bread slices and a banana.

By the time I was cleaned up and hydrated, it was already 2PM. I knew I had to get to work on my biostatistics exam, so instead of taking my usual post-race nap, I reluctantly sat myself down at the kitchen table and got to work on my final. Ryan and Happy both took a long afternoon nap, and it took so much effort not to join them! I did take a few breaks in between my biostats problem-sets to stretch out a few times, though.

When 5pM rolled around, it was like an alarm in my stomach went off—I became so hungry that I seriously contemplated eating my arm off!! (Okay, so that might be a slight exaggeration…). I marched into where Ryan and Happy were taking a nap and plopped myself down on the bed next to them. They totally could have kept sleeping, but I would not allow it. Um hello—homegirl just ran a marathon and is now ready to appease her fully returned appetite!  Ryan finally came to and I had already pulled up on the internet potential restaurants for us to enjoy—the majority of them being pizza places.

After getting dressed, Ryan and I headed down to the car. (Note, my mom’s home in Ohio is located in the legit woods and if you step outside, you automatically turn into a billy-goat because it is so freakin’ hilly. At this point in the day, hills…and anything resembling them…such as stairs, were not my friends.)

IMG_0646

Hobble wobble to the car…

This land is meant for sheep. And billygoats. Bahhhhh.

IMG_0679

Happy says: This is not the way you treat a BillyGoat. Let me outttt!

(Okay so I know that picture above is completely random, but I just had to include it because it’s so funny! My mom told me and Ryan that we could take home an old Sherpa bag of hers to use for Happy on an upcoming Christmas trip to Arkansas, so we just wanted to make sure it worked).

Moving on…

We ended up going to Dewey’s Pizza in Kenwood, and ohmigaaawd was it delicious.  I frequented this restaurant back when I was in high school, and I knew it would be the perfect night to show Ryan what it was all about.

IMG_0662

Yessss

IMG_0647

What a poser

What’s so delicious about this pizza is the fact that you can tailor it to any craving on the planet. Not only do they have an amaaazing home-made red sauce (that I can seriously eat by itself, don’t judge me), but they have this awesome garlic white-sauce, too! Heaven. On. A. Plate.

Anyway, I started off with a huge jass salad topped with every single vegetable known to man, goat cheese (seriously y’all, them billygoats follow me everywhere), and their homemade Greek Roasted Red Pepper Vinaigrette.

IMG_0650

So. Damn. Good.

I also ordered an eat-your-heart-out Killer Veggie Pizza, and it was to die for…

IMG_0652

Get in my belly.

IMG_0655

Success

Because we’re carbohydrate lovers in the HappyTales household (I mean seriously now, my last name is Rice…how can we not be?), Ryan ordered his own pizza, too.

IMG_0651

Ryan tested, Ryan approved (not like that’s hard to come by, though…)

IMG_0661

Presh

So yes, this dining experience was one for the books. Not only did we have a great time celebrating my accomplishment from earlier in the day, but I was also able to completely set aside my worries surrounding my biostats final and leave them on the table at home—that in and of itself is a great accomplishment for me! I was completely relaxed and enjoyed myself in the moment for the entire time we were out.

After leaving Dewey’s, we decided that we didn’t want to head home quite yet. So where did we end up finding ourselves?

Graeters, of course!

IMG_0665

There’s always room for dessert :)

Graeters Ice Cream is seriously the best known ice cream on the planet. Heck, Oprah even had it on her Favorite Things show! Cincinnatians pride themselves on this stuff. If you haven’t tried it, you must make your way to Ohio ASAP and get yourself a cone. You will not regret it.

Ryan and I hadn’t been to Graeters in over a year, so we went big. After sampling a few of the flavors, I settled on one scoop of Cookie Dough, and two scoops of Buckeye Blitz (who am I kidding, I will always get Buckeye Blitz… it is so.freaking.good!). Ryan got some tutti-frutti thing that I can’t remember (if chocolate is not involved, it’s not important to me…).

IMG_0672

Cookie Dough + Buckeye Blitz (aka, peanut butter and chocolate w/ cookie dough chunks mixed in) = YUM!

IMG_0670

so yummy...

I proooobably should have skipped the cookie dough and just stuck with the Buckeye Blitz, because after all of the Dewey’s Pizza, my stomach was a little unsettled. But oh my lawd, my tastebuds were in heaven!

IMG_0671

A spoonful of sugar can act as tummy medicine, right?

It took me 30 minutes to eat that thing because it was so damn rich. But it was so good, and it was just what I needed to get back to another few hours worth of studying.

IMG_0675

Yes, I am totally rocking my YMCA fleece…ice cream = cold!

Once home, I hit the books again for a few more hours. Around midnight I got to packing up my things to get ready for our early wake-up call and drive back to Charlotte. In the midst of running around the house packing my things up, I heard Ryan yell from the living room “Oh my GOD!!! Hurry, come in here!!!”

The urgency in Ryan’s voice made my heart sink, and I thought something horrible had happened to Happy. Turns out, he was sitting on the edge of the couch, staring at the news channel – I looked at the screen, and read the news of something that will forever be a part of this generation –Osama Bin Laden had been killed.

I was completely stunned. Shocked. Didn’t know what that meant. Couldn’t comprehend all of the celebrations taking place in the streets. Was it really justice? I wasn’t sure. And I’m still not. So I’m not even going to get into it. But I will say that my bedtime became even later (and yes, this is still the day that I had a 3:30AM wake up call, ran a marathon, didn’t take a nap, and worked on a biostats final…), and I didn’t end up hitting the hay until 2:45AM. Adrenaline is an amazing thing, my friends.

Monday morning we woke up around 8AM (ohmygosh, sleep never felt SO GOOD!), ate some brekkie, and packed up the car.

IMG_0681

Once again, I started out the drive so that I could later attempt a nap and work on my biostats final.

IMG_0792

Such a good little travel-pup!

By the time we got to the Mountains of the TN/NC border, I was finally starting to transfer some of my answers to the computer, and typing up my test document. I ended up finishing it and turning it in around 2AM later that night (err, morning?). That final ended up being 23 pages long of pure biostatistics. Yes, twenty-three pages… of pure numbers, equations and analysis.

IMG_0744

So close to being finished!

But you know what makes all of that hard-work worthwhile? The fact that I ended up with a 95% on the final!!!!!!

IMG_0750

<3 the mountains!

Our drive was very uneventful (thank the lord for no more flats!) and we made it back to Charlotte by 6PM.  Once we got back into Charlotte, I whipped out the 26.2 sticker I bought at the Expo…
