No Better Way to Celebrate

Wow.

2012 is already a year to remember… and we are just a handful of days in!

First came our engagement… and what better way to celebrate than a rockin’ NYE party?!?!

Champagne? Don’t mind if I do!

Ryan’s buddy (and coworker) Zack hosted a festive get-together at his new house, and we all rung in the New Year together in style.

Piñata-style!

Two of my best girlfriends came, and they were SO excited to hear the proposal story in person. Along with family, they were some of the first we told! Let’s just say, there were a lot of squeals when we saw each other.

As time went on, we decided to make good use of that piñata…

Don’t be fooled…

IMG_6009

This was not a piñata favor.

IMG_6029

But these were…

Yeah. I’ll let your imagination run with that.

Ryan and I had a blast sharing our news with everyone –we definitely were basking in the “freshly engaged glow.” Heck, we still are! And to tell ya the truth, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of recapping the events that happened that day.

IMG_5978

The next morning, we continued the celebration by waking up and going ICESKATING!!!!

During the winter months, downtown Charlotte (which is actually dubbed “Uptown” for reasons that still confuse me…) hosts an outdoor ice-skating rink. This year was our first year going!

IMG_6048

I’ve only been ice-skating a handful of times in my past, and each time I go it’s as as I’m stepping onto the ice for the first time ever.

IMG_6064

Trying to play it cool

But most of the time, I looked like this

IMG_6065

MVP, Team Awesome.

Seeing as Ryan is actually pretty skilled on the ice, he dragged me around in circles a few times. I know. We’re so romantic.

IMG_6059

Ryan is probably holding me up so I don’t fall in this picture. What a man.

Nevertheless, by the end of our time out on the ice, I was skating (slow, but steady) loops around the rink!

IMG_6052

No falls = success!

After skating, we took a walk around uptown

Oh Charlotte, you are so pretty

So yes, a NYE party and ice-skating are surefire ways to celebrate and have a good time.

But you want to know a (possibly even) better way to celebrate?

How about… a plane ticket to New Orleans to be on the field during the BCS National Championship game??

Yeah, that’d make a pretty sweet deal. (Well, for Ryan, at least. I know nothing about football).

Lucky for Ryan, he actually got to do just that. For work. WORK, people. Any job that sends you to the BCS National Championship game (and has you stand on the sidelines?!) is flippin’ amazing.

Too bad neither of the teams were Arkansas…

Turns out, though… things actually got better than just standing on the sidelines for Ryan.

Ryan got to step in as referee for the sponsorship give-away during the half-time show.

Oh heyyyyyy… that’d be my fiance (!!!). On national television. During the BCS National Championship Game.

No big deal.

I saw him a handful of times (although very briefly each time), waving his arms.

Thanks to twitter and Facebook (and the countless number of notices and texts) Ryan and I received, I felt like I was engaged to a celebrity.

It’s safe to say Ryan has been having one pretty dang good year so far, all things considered.

As for me? Well, I haven’t been doing so bad myself. Not only am I still floating on cloud nine about our engagement, but I am also head-over-heels in love with my new job (and my new co-workers!!). The work is, in a word, one-hundred-percent heartwarming. And so, so fulfilling. This video explains why…

I’ve gotten chills while at work a countless number of times, solely by hearing my coworkers talk about the stories and updates their donors share with them as they go through the bone marrow donation process. This work is truly incredible.

Here are some pictures of my new digs (mainly because my mom has been asking to see…)

Can’t wait to get my white-board!

I <3 my office area. It’s so fun to see how my co-workers have theirs all decorated, too. We sure are a creative bunch of folks!

So yes, as you can see, things are going exceptionally well so far this year. And making this New Year even sweeter is the fact that Ryan and I get to go on that trip that was up in the air a few weeks ago.

Tomorrow after work, we embark on the long twelve hour drive (one way…) to visit my mom and Gerry on Sanibel Island for a  little over a week!!!!! I am *beyond* excited, as I haven’t spent quality time with my mom since last Christmas season! Let’s just say, there are a lot of fun plans in store. I’m sure y’all can guess what some of them are Smile. There certainly is no better way to celebrate than being on “island time” and soaking up some good ‘ole Florida sunshine.

Post-Holiday blues…? Not this year!

Well today is Jan 5th, and usually I am feeling the post-holiday blues by now. Butttttt… so far this year, I’m not! And I am so thankful for that!

You see, every year I look forward to the days that fall between October 31st and January 1st. I love the buildup to the holidays. Each and every one of them. It doesn’t bother me in the least that stores start putting Christmas décor/merchandise out in early November (heck, probably even October!) In fact, I am totally okay with jamming out to Christmas tunes if they randomly pop up on my ipod in July. It just keeps me excited and looking forward to my favorite time of year—the Holiday season!

They call it Christmas in July for a reason, right?

In addition, it doesn’t hurt that October is a pretty stellar month in and of itself, as that is the month when I met Ryan 2 years ago (10/23), and it is the month that we found Happy (10/9) and welcomed her home (10/12). Aaaaand to add on top of all of the awesomeness that is Thanksgiving and Christmas (and all of the family time that comes with), I have my birthday (12/10) and my and Ryan’s anniversary (12/23) thrown in there, too. So the Holiday season is super busy time for this Happy Tales household!

So, why am I not feeling down now that the pace has slowed? Well to be honest, I think a lot of it has to due with the fact that I created this little blog. I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve done so far with Happy Tales (even if it’s just a few posts!) and I get excited every time I realize one of you has left me a comment, or a family member mentions that they’ve read a post. Conversing with you all gives me something to look forward to each day, and I like brainstorming ideas to talk about. I even have a growing list of different things to blog about (y’all know how much I love my lists!). I also like feeling like I’m connected to like-minded people, even if its just to a few other bloggers. It’s refreshing, and a change of pace for me.

It’s kind of funny — I work at the YMCA, but only a handful of my coworkers actually take the time to work out. Many of them tend to complain about how tired they are and how much they just want to go home once the work-day is over. They know staying fit is good for them, so there’s not much room to preach (plus, I tend to only give advice if its solicited). I figure that since they are already in the building… it’s pretty much a personal choice at that point. (Don’t people say one of the hardest parts is actually getting to the gym?)  But that’s a whole ‘nother story for a different day…

Do any of you suffer from post-holiday blues? If so, how do you get yourself out of the funk?

A Look Back on 2010…Recap: Jan, Feb & March

So since it’s the beginning of a New Year and I’m just now starting a blog… I thought it’d be neat to do a quick little recap of things that happened in 2010! It sure was a great year for me in a number of ways! I think I’m going to split up the year into 4 different posts… just to make it more manageable. So make sure to check them all out!

First, a quick backstory… Ryan and I have been dating for 2 years after meeting in the Fall of 2008. About a year later, in November of 2009, we decided we wanted to move in together. However, my lease wasn’t ending until July 2010 so Ryan went ahead and found an awesome apartment to live in. He moved in at the beginning of January with his good friend (and coworker) Jon. Jon understood the situation and was totally okay with having a temporary place to live, as he was new to Charlotte and wanted to get a feel for the city so he could find his own place to live come summer.  Talk about things just falling into place, huh?!  I moved in with Ryan this past June and we have been loving living together since!

January 2010

-Had a fun New Year’s with Ryan and his new rommate, Jon

New Year's Eve...Happy 2010!

To-be roomies. How presh.

-Ryan moved into his new apartment, the apartment that we both live in now!

Day one of the New Year... moving day for Ryan! 1/1/10

Just try and fit one more thing in this truck... I dare you

Hilarious story on how the movers had to hoist our hugeass couch up and over our balcony that is literally a full story off the ground in the backyard… It was unreal. I took pictures because I was in disbelief. I probably should have been helping… ha! Good thing we just signed a new year-long lease on our place. I don’t want to deal with moving the couch out of here quite yet. That’s gonna take a miracle.

So sterile. Bleh.

Oh hello, Rooms To Go. What brings you here at 6:45AM?

Um, sorry... you're going to do what with that couch?

You would've thought they were kidding when they said "Oh, we'll just hoist it over the balcony."

I'll just stay back here and take pictures and laugh at the ridiculousness of everything that is going on at the ungodly hour of 7AM. Maybe this is all just a dream. No one would seriously try to do this, right?

Proved me wrong. Now... let's ease it on over without dropping it, shall we?

Success!

Hey there Hey, Mr. Behemoth of a Couch. Lovely seeing you inside.

All set up

Oh-so-comfy. Totally worth the 7AM lifting session...

-I started opening the present Ryan gave me for Xmas. He created something like an advent calendar that counted down the days until I moved in with him in June.  I was instructed to tear away one page a day as we moved through the spring and summer.  Each page detailed something special on it—like a memory we have together, something he finds special about me, or an inside joke between us.  It was like opening up a gift every single day! Best present ever. Well…. I can say that every present he’s given me has been the best gift ever. More on this later, though.

-I helped put on the Runners Expo at the Y. My advisor at Furman was the keynote speaker, and other FU professors came up from Greenville to talk as well… so neat to catch up with them!

-Ryan and I attended a Panther’s game (my first NFL game that I could actual enjoy since I wasn’t working it!) Turns out this game was the coldest in Panther HISTORY! It was so cold. SO cold. Picture this: seats at the top of the stadium and steady gusts of wind throughout the whole game…words don’t even describe.

All bundled up and ready for the game

Ohhh, what a crowd! *cricket, cricket*

Smile pretty

Cheesy shot

Handwarmers. Can always count on the handwarmers.

Sportin' the shades

-I got my 15 minutes of fame when the News channel came to the Y during the huge snowstorm we had.  Seems like everyone and their brother watched the news that day.  3 weeks later people were still recognizing me as “the girl from the Y” on the news station… even the cashiers at the grocery store!

February 2010

-Ryan and Jon hosted a super-fun Superbowl party! Hoping for a second-go-round in 2011  :)

Our epic entertainment center. Perfect for Superbowl viewing

Snugglefest with Rachel and Katie

Why the long face, Ry?

-Ryan treated me to a very special Valentine’s Day dinner at McCormick and Schmick’s. So, so delicious, and the service was impeccable! Been wanting to go back ever since.

See that festive wrapping paper? That's crafted by your's truly from Charlotte's Skirt! magazine

-Ryan and I bought some fun things to help decorate his apartment and make it feel like “home”

New wall art for the living room!

Bedroom decor

Pretty blankets for the living room!

Cozy

-I decided I wanted to take a different route with my career at the Y and I really started figuring out my options so that I could focus more on public health

March 2010

-I ran around like a crazy person between all the center city YMCAs to help the put on Corporate Cup – an annual half marathon event that we have each year to help with fundraising efforts. I seriously LOVE putting on races!!

-My mom and stepdad, Gerry, drove through and visited me and Ryan in Charlotte on their way back to Ohio after spending the winter months in Florida (they call themselves snowbirds… live in FL during the winter months, and OH the during summa time).

Catchin' up with Momma Rice and Gerry during their short stay

-I interviewed for, and landed, the job I’ve been aiming to get at the YMCA since I started … a Health Educator in the Y’s wellness center!

Holla -- New job! Just call me Ms. Health Educator
