Oh, Happy Day!

Wanna know a secret?

I’ll give you oneeeee guess.

Here’s a hint…

IMG_2650

Yep.

I miss this little girl.

Like whoa.

Thankfully, I don’t think Happ’s is missing us too, too much. Bobby’s been keeping us in the loop (picture text-messages are where it’s at!), and it looks like Happs and Dakota are keeping each other quite entertained. (We’re talkin’ playtimes lasting until the wee-hours of the morning…).

I have a feeling we’re gonna come home to one zonked out puppy. And some pretty epic stories.

Ohhh, I can’t wait!

Oh, Happy Day!

And a special one, at that. Care to know why? Ohhh you know, because today is the day Happy get’s her monthly bath! (Oh dear. Writing that in words makes Happy sound SoStankin’Gross).

IMG_1064

Hurray for HYGIENE!

Whenever the first of the month rolls around (Newsflash: that’s TOMORROW for those of you who are still in the mindset that it’s mid-July. Okay. So maybe that’s just me? Sigh, always behind the times…) we take our little Happster into the guest bathroom for some scrub-a-dub-dub time.

DSCF1569

haaaaalp!

Ya know, I’m not exactly sure how this monthly habit started. Heck, I don’t even know how often dogs are supposed to be washed. Is there a rule about this? Actually…don’t answer that. I don’t want to know how wrong I am and end up feeling like a horrible doggie-parent. (I already have too much stress on my mind, considering the fact I’m in the middle of my epidemiology final. Hrmph.)

All I know is that this time-line works for us, and we have yet to have a stinky doggie on our hands.

IMG_0976

Don’t even think I’d spare your bed from my staaankiness...

DSCF3105

The name's Happs, and I.DO.WHAT.I.WANT.

This scrubalicious time-line also works out well for us because we give Happs her monthly flea/tick meds on the 1st of every month. It’s like a clean-slate every single month.

In addition, Happy gets her heart-worm medicine after every bath. To her, this little brown-turd-o-medicine is like the treat of all treats. Whenever we free her from her bath towel and she hears the words, “Happy…do you want your *medicine*??!?”…

DSCF2230

OhmiGAH is it the first of the month!??!???????

… she immediately prances over  to the kitchen carpet (the place where all treats are administered, duhhh) and waits patiently for us to open the foil packaging.

DSCF1699

Shmeeeee! Homegirl wants her MEDS!

After a good (hand)“shake,” “ nutmeg,” and a “rollover” (or three), we hand over the medicine treat to Happy and she scampers off to her doggie-bed as if she just scored the jackpot of all treats. You’d think they laced this stuff with pure bacon. Or crack.

IMG_1196

Lick-yer-chops-clean-GOOD!

These are the pattern of events that go down every single month on the 1st, and for the past 10 months we’ve had Happs, these shenanigans have left me a laughing (and smiling) fool every.single.time.

Every now and then, Ryan and I have a field-fest clipping Happy’s nails.

IMG_0132

Check out dem stems

Scratch that, I am the one that clips Happy’s nails, as Ryan becomes a nervous, shaky mess at the sight of the clippers. Not exactly the picture of safety.

IMG_0970

Don’t hurt me?

To circumvent having to deal with a bouncy and curious pupsqueak, I’ve mastered the art of clipping Happy’s nails while she’s in “sleepy-mode.”

Derrrrrrr

Out like a light

I’ve mentioned before on the bloggy-blog that once 9PM rolls around, Happy’s “on” button gets switched to “off.” (This reminds me, I seriously need to figure out who’s in charge of her remote control and offer them some bribes…I mean peace-offerings).

Another thing Happy loves? Being brushed. By her daddy. I’m not sure who likes this more… but it’s pretty adorable to see Ryan grab Happy’s brush and head out to the porch with her pouncin’ at his heels with excitement. Melt-my-heart, whydon’tyou.

Ahhh yes, just another day at La Spa de HappyTales

Nevertheless…

IMG_2550

This still happens.

I blame summer. And the hot-like-FIYA temperatures.

Is it just me, or do dogs shed more in the summer? This is probably another super-obvious question that I should already know the answer to, but my brain is fried and I’d rather just hear y’alls input.

So please, do tell! How often do you wash your dog? Or rather, do you even wash your dog? How often does nail-clipping in your household happen? And brushing?

Speaking of brushing, do you brush your dogs teeth? Our vet gave us some doggie-toothpaste and a doggie-toothbrush a while back, but we have yet to test it out on Happs. He said to “train” her with peanut-butter first, so she’d like the sensation of the toothbrush.

So, if you DO brush your dog’s teeth, how often do ya brush’em?!

Oh, Happy Day!

Hey there, folks. Happy Sunday!

Hope y’all are staying cool Smile And for those of you who are in parts of the world that are experiencing mild temperatures, let me just say… I am  jealous. Because unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re pr0bably well aware that a good portion of the US is suffering from a horrendous heat spell.

Yes, I realize it is summer time. And with that comes hot temperatures.

I know. Go ahead and call me Captain Obvious. It's fine.

But you know what else summer brings, especially to those of us in the good ‘ole South?

Humidity.

Ohhhh yes. Humidity in the South is like none I’ve ever experienced. Trust me. I’m a girl with curls and therefore a walking barameter.

Sometimes... you just gotta embrace the fro.

Yep. It happens.

Let’s just say, the only other place my curls get this curly is when I’m at the beach. You know… at sea-level. Or on a cruise ship. (boats! Swoon).

http://happytalesblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/82064157.jpg?w=506&h=338

A girl can dream, right?

Sadly, I am neither at the beach nor on a cruise ship, as I am currently landlocked (for the most part) in Charlotte. And according to my (curly-haired) calculations, the humidity has been crazy as ever this summer.

I’ve lived in the South for a good 7 (or is it 8? I’ve lost track…) years and I’ve learned that you simply cannot fight the heat. You just have to embrace it, and do what you can to stay cool from April through October (because yes, temperatures truly are crazy-hot for an extended period of time down here).

You know what this also means? It means that you pet-owners out there have the added responsibility of making sure your furbabies stay cool. They don’t have vocal cords like us humans to complain when they’re thirsty and whine when they want to come inside. So do them a favor and make sure water is available at all times.

Brilliant

The following are some tips on how to make sure you can keep your furbaby cool and hydrated during this hot-as-hades summer weather…

-Summer is the season for traveling, so if you’re hitting the road with the pupsqueak in tow, make sure you have a water-bowl on hand. There’s even some pretty handy collapsible travel bowls that you can tote along with you to keep fido hydrated during a hike or walk at the park.

We're talkin' high-tech here, people.

-Speaking of traveling, never (ever!)  leave your dog in the car unattended. Even if you think it’ll just be for a minute. Just.Don’t.Do.It. ExclamationPoint.

-Ever play dress-up with your dog? No? Well now’s the perfect time to start! Grab yourself a bandana, douse it with water and stick it in the freezer for a half hour or so. Tie it around your fido’s neck and watch your pup sink into a huge sigh of heat-relief. Heck, this sounds like a great idea for humans, too. (Hello, crazy marathon training long runs…).

Cool dog

Even cooler

Not so much...

-If your dog is primarily outdoor dog, consider bringing him inside during the heat of the day. If he must stay outside, make sure there is plenty of shade and water available at all hours of the day. Better yet, invest in a kiddie-turned-doggie pool and fill-er-up with the backyard hose. Your dog will love you forever. Promise.

C'mon in! Whatcha waitin' for?

-One word: ice-cubes. That’s right folks, something as simple as a piece of ice can provide cool and refreshing entertainment. Happy loves the damn things, and paws them around the kitchen floor like a wannabe hockey player. It’s quite funny. And if you’re feeling super-giving, you can even invest in toys that are made to be frozen. I’m sure they work almost as well as icecubes Smile with tongue out

DOGS AND ICECUBES

-And one last thing I’d like to touch on that I feel can be over looked: walking your dog on pavement/sidewalks. Have you ever been to the beach at high-noon, kicked off your flipflops to dig your toes in the sand only to find yourself wincing in pain from the surprisingly hot, burning, sand? Yeah. Not the best feeling in the world… is it? So do your dog a favor and walk him shaded areas… or better yet, the grass!

Of course, this is not a complete list by any means. These tips are just a few important tidbits I thought I’d pass along. Feel free to share your own advice in the comments! I’m all about new and inventive ways to make sure furbabies are as comfortable as can be in this crazy hot weather.

How do you guard your pup against the heat? Has your pup ever suffered from heat stroke? Are you tired of this crazy heat-wave and ready for cooler temperatures?

[Added to note: Just realized this is my 100th post! Crazy.]
