No Better Way to Celebrate

Wow.

2012 is already a year to remember… and we are just a handful of days in!

First came our engagement… and what better way to celebrate than a rockin’ NYE party?!?!

IMG_5998

Champagne? Don’t mind if I do!

IMG_5946

Ryan’s buddy (and coworker) Zack hosted a festive get-together at his new house, and we all rung in the New Year together in style.

Piñata-style!

Two of my best girlfriends came, and they were SO excited to hear the proposal story in person. Along with family, they were some of the first we told! Let’s just say, there were a lot of squeals when we saw each other.

As time went on, we decided to make good use of that piñata…

IMG_6016

Boys will be boys

IMG_6018

Don’t be fooled…

IMG_6009

This was not a piñata favor.

IMG_6029

But these were…

Yeah. I’ll let your imagination run with that.

Ryan and I had a blast sharing our news with everyone –we definitely were basking in the “freshly engaged glow.” Heck, we still are! And to tell ya the truth, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of recapping the events that happened that day.

IMG_5978

The next morning, we continued the celebration by waking up and going ICESKATING!!!!

During the winter months, downtown Charlotte (which is actually dubbed “Uptown” for reasons that still confuse me…) hosts an outdoor ice-skating rink. This year was our first year going!

IMG_6048

I’ve only been ice-skating a handful of times in my past, and each time I go it’s as as I’m stepping onto the ice for the first time ever.

IMG_6064

Trying to play it cool

But most of the time, I looked like this

IMG_6065

MVP, Team Awesome.

Seeing as Ryan is actually pretty skilled on the ice, he dragged me around in circles a few times. I know. We’re so romantic.

IMG_6059

Ryan is probably holding me up so I don’t fall in this picture. What a man.

Nevertheless, by the end of our time out on the ice, I was skating (slow, but steady) loops around the rink!

IMG_6052

No falls = success!

After skating, we took a walk around uptown

IMG_6095

Oh Charlotte, you are so pretty

So yes, a NYE party and ice-skating are surefire ways to celebrate and have a good time.

But you want to know a (possibly even) better way to celebrate?

How about… a plane ticket to New Orleans to be on the field during the BCS National Championship game??

Yeah, that’d make a pretty sweet deal. (Well, for Ryan, at least. I know nothing about football).

Lucky for Ryan, he actually got to do just that. For work. WORK, people. Any job that sends you to the BCS National Championship game (and has you stand on the sidelines?!) is flippin’ amazing.

Too bad neither of the teams were Arkansas…

Turns out, though… things actually got better than just standing on the sidelines for Ryan.

Ryan got to step in as referee for the sponsorship give-away during the half-time show.

Oh heyyyyyy… that’d be my fiance (!!!). On national television. During the BCS National Championship Game.

No big deal.

I saw him a handful of times (although very briefly each time), waving his arms.

Thanks to twitter and Facebook (and the countless number of notices and texts) Ryan and I received, I felt like I was engaged to a celebrity.

It’s safe to say Ryan has been having one pretty dang good year so far, all things considered.

As for me? Well, I haven’t been doing so bad myself. Not only am I still floating on cloud nine about our engagement, but I am also head-over-heels in love with my new job (and my new co-workers!!). The work is, in a word, one-hundred-percent heartwarming. And so, so fulfilling. This video explains why…

I’ve gotten chills while at work a countless number of times, solely by hearing my coworkers talk about the stories and updates their donors share with them as they go through the bone marrow donation process. This work is truly incredible.

Here are some pictures of my new digs (mainly because my mom has been asking to see…)

Can’t wait to get my white-board!

I <3 my office area. It’s so fun to see how my co-workers have theirs all decorated, too. We sure are a creative bunch of folks!

So yes, as you can see, things are going exceptionally well so far this year. And making this New Year even sweeter is the fact that Ryan and I get to go on that trip that was up in the air a few weeks ago.

Tomorrow after work, we embark on the long twelve hour drive (one way…) to visit my mom and Gerry on Sanibel Island for a  little over a week!!!!! I am *beyond* excited, as I haven’t spent quality time with my mom since last Christmas season! Let’s just say, there are a lot of fun plans in store. I’m sure y’all can guess what some of them are Smile. There certainly is no better way to celebrate than being on “island time” and soaking up some good ‘ole Florida sunshine.

Birthday Fun at Kennedy’s

So this past week has been a lot of fun, with only a bit of homework sprinkled in between work and play. Just the way I like it Smile

Tapering has been treating me well, and I’d say my legs are feeling very fresh… but man oh man am I just itching to run! I actually did end up hitting the pavement today (I couldn’t hold out any longer!) and logged in an easy 7 miles, but my goodness, I am so wanting more!  I can’t express in words how badly I just want to get out there and run for miles on end (talk to me on Monday, and I’m sure I’ll be singing a different tune… ha!).

So yes, today I had what I’m considering my last “real” run before the marathon. I can’t promise I won’t run a mile or two before the big race, but I’m gonna try my hardest to just sit tight and wait until Sunday. I’m sure Ryan will be suggesting walks galore to satisfy my need to be outdoors. He sure does know the way to my heart, I love leisurely walks just as much as running Smile

So before I buckle down (and buckle up!) for an intense weekend of travel, running an actual marathon, and crunching numbers for my “mathlete” marathon (yes, my biostatisics final went “live” today and I’m already feeling the stress of all of the number crunching and equations hanging over my head…), I’d like to share with you highlights from Tuesday night’s get-together at Kennedy’s for Caitlin’s and Michelle and Lori’s birthdays!

Sadly, my camera was not charged and I didn’t realize it ‘til I got there (true sign of rookie blogger). Caitlin offered to let me use her charger, but the size of my battery was too big (that’s what she said?). Other’s offered up their batteries so I could at least snap a few shots, but none of them fit my new camera! Luckily people offered to share a few pictures with me :)

The amazing Jen brought deeeelciious vegan vanilla and strawberry cupcakes from Cupcrazed Cakery, and Kennedy’s supplied free birthday shots for the entire table.

Me and Ryan with the newly engaged couple!

It was a super fun night, and I met a few of the Charlotte bloggers I haven’t met yet. I even ran into Katie for the first time since being at Furman!

After everyone finished up their dinner, the majority of everyone headed home, but a few of us stayed and headed downstairs to take part in Trivia night! Now I might not be good at trivia, but I sure do love playing (and for good reason Smile).

Now I’m off to finish packing for my marathon, and hitting the hay early! I have a super early wake-up call, as I’m headed to Caitlin’s for a Royal Wedding Viewing party. Wedding watching always trumps an early start to road-trips Smile with tongue out. Priorities, right?

Are any of you waking up early to watch coverage of the Royal Wedding? Or are you letting the DVR handle that early-morning wake-up call? Or, do you not even care? Up until this week, I had zero desire in anything dealing with the Royal Wedding… I was actually getting annoyed by all of the coverage. But I’m thinking it was because the wedding was so far away. Now that it’s here, I’m actually kind of excited!

PS. Big thanks to Caitlin, Michelle, Lori and Diana for the pictures!!

Celebrate Good Times

As you know by now, I’ve had major reason to celebrate. And last weekend, I definitely took part in my fair share of celebrating.

It all started around the morning of Friday, April 15th right before I was about to head out the door for work. In my experience, it’s never a good idea to check email the moment before I need to leave, because more often than not, I get sucked into the “world of Gmail”/twitter/blog checking and the like. But bad habits die hard, and I decided to check it anyway.

In my inbox the first email I saw was from the student affairs director over at UNC. Excitement started to build in my chest (okay, and maybe a little bit of fear and anxiety…). Then my eyes glanced over to the subject line, because I was a little stunned that this email was actually sitting in my inbox.

I thought to myself, “OMG could it really be…??”

Instead of immediately opening the email, my impatient self glanced over to the subject line to see if I could get any more hints as to what the email was about. (I know I know, I should’ve just immediately read the e-mail, but I think my fingers were frozen and forgot how to move the mouse to open the actual the email. I mean, I’ve only been waiting for this moment since 2007. No big deal, right?). For those of you not familiar with Gmail, there’s a setting you can activate that allows you to see a “glimpse” of the first few lines of text in any email.

Well, here is what that “glimpse” read …

“Congratulations! Let me be among the first to welcome you into the 2011 cohort…”

jfdksjfksjfdkjfsdlkjfdkljfsJKFDJSJFDKSJFSD!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, that’s all I saw before I started screaming/laughing/crying and jumping up and down… and then my fingers unfroze and I managed to open up the email (while still jumping up and down and screaming). I got halfway through reading before I G-chatted Ryan and shared the news. Next thing I knew, my phone was ringing and he was calling me.

I don’t think I spoke a word of English (see gibberish above…)  in between my tears of joy and happiness, but he’s good at translating my excited gibberish (he’s had 2.5 years of practice now) and sent along his congratulations (and laughed at me, of course). Needless to say, I was 5 minutes late to work but BEAMING the entire day! And then when Ryan got home from work later that evening, he treated me out to dinner at Pinkey’s Westside Grill! (If you’re in Charlotte, go eat here…they are the ones who used to run The Penguin!).

And then we went to Best Buy and I bought myself a new camera. I figured I deserved to splurge after all of that hard work (and I was in the market for a new camera anyway, so what better time to treat myself than after some good news?!).

And cookies. Ryan surprised me with deeelicious triple chocolate chunk cookies! And they were heavenly Smile

Triple chocolate... Quadruple yum!

Get in my belly!

Saturday rolled around and we continued the celebration by relaxing all day and doing anything and everything that our little hearts desired. Not a single text book was cracked, and the TI-83 calculator remained safely in it’s case. In fact, that was the case for the entire weekend. We went out for dinner at Dilworth Neighborhood Bar and Grille (I freakin’ loooove that place!) and then we returned home to get ready for part two of the night.

We're quickly becoming regulars

Thanks to a Groupon, we had a lot of fun with the menu :)

I’ve met some pretty awesome people through this little blog, and had plans to meet up Ensley and Alyssa for a celebratory night out on the town!

These girls are waaaay fun, and we spent the whole night dancing up a storm.

me, Alyssa's two besties from college, Alyssa, and Ensley!

Rockin' out

We even ran into one of the interns who worked with me at the Y 1.5 years ago when I first started my financial development position.

IMG_0045

Haaaaalarious. Looks like the Y taught him well ;)

IMG_0048

Blurry. How appropriate…

IMG_0059

The boy

IMG_0063

Too much fun.

Some of Ryan’s co-workers ended up joining us after they got out of the Bobcats game. Seriously love them. It’s like one big family. (Sad that I didn’t get any pictures of them, but I’m betting good money they’re sitting in cube-land right now reading this and sighing a a big sigh of relief…).  But yes, it was such a fun (and needed!) night out!!

Oh, and just a little disclaimer: I might be a public health educator… but I’m by no means perfect. Yes I drink, and yes, sometimes it’s a little bit too much. But I also have plenty of nights out where I don’t drink and have just as much fun… so if you feel the need to point out how ironic it is that I celebrated the good news of getting into a master of public health program in this way,  you’d just be preaching’ to the choir.

So as a health educator, I’d like to share some words of wisdom:

-Drink in moderation.

-Always have a designated driver.

-Strength in numbers

According to the CDC, binge drinking corresponds to a pattern of drinking 5 or more drinks on a single occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on a single occasion for women, generally within about 2 hours.

Done done and done.

So let’s recap: please be responsible and do as I say…not as I do.

Tonight should be yet another fun night of celebrations! Today is Caitlin’s birthday, as well as Michelle and Lori’s… and Kelly’s birthday is later this week, too! And to top that off, Nicole got engaged this past Friday , and Lori got engaged over the weekend! Holy batman, that’s a lot to celebrate!

Have you had anything to celebrate recently?! Anything in the future you’re working hard towards that you can’t wait to celebrate?! I can’t wait to celebrate my upcoming MARATHON this weekend!!!! I can’t believe it’s almost go-time!
