Oh, Happy Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the momma’s out there! I hope you all are spending it with the ones you love the most. My mom is currently in the sunny state of Florida, but she’ll be making her way up to Ohio for the summer this coming weekend, and she and Gerry are making a pit-stop in Charlotte along the way. I am so excited  to spend time with them!

Mi Madre

Today I’m going to put a fun spin on today’s Oh, Happy Day post, so if you’re interested in why my mom is one of the most amazing women I know, check out this post.

It’s pretty obvious that I’m not a *baby’s* momma, (heck, I don’t even have a ring on my finger!). However, I do consider myself a doggie-momma to the cutest furball in the entire world: Little Miss Happy.

Come hold me?

Like many, I grew up with a house full of animals. (Okay not really, my mom only allowed us to have 1 dog at a time, no matter how much I begged!).

My first family pet was an old black lab (Flowerpot) who passed away right after I was born. Soon after, my parents adopted another black lab—Poppy. I grew up with Poppy as if she were my sister, me — 6 months old, and her– 3 months old. I always love hearing my mom tell stories about how Poppy and I teethed on each other toys (mmm yeah, don’t judge…), and chased each other around the house. My mom always said that we were quiet an adorable and mischievous team.

Two weeks before my 13th birthday, Poppy passed away from old age. That was one of my first experiences with death, and I was absolutely heartbroken. I still tear up thinking about her… as she was *such* an integral part of our family. Nevertheless, my 13th birthday rolled around and my mom was able to introduce a new puppy into our family – this time, a white fluffy little Bichon Frise pupsqueak named Chance.

Chancipoo

My mom named her Chance  because she “took a chance” and bought her from a  breeder in Oklahoma. The first time we ever saw her was when the Delta attendants carried her off of the airplane at midnight  (she had missed  her connecting fight in Texas and caught the last plane into Cincinnati!).

Chance and I got to spend many wonderful years together before I headed off to college, and whenever I returned home for a break, she was always *so* excited to see me! Seriously, there is nothing that rivals the love a dog shows when they see you for the first time in a long time. When I returned home from my year-long study abroad trip to Australia, Chance peed on the spot the instant she saw me come through the door. That, my friends, is love.

Sadly, Chance died suddenly three years ago this past March (you can read that story here), and once again, I was completely heartbroken over the loss.  It only took my parents a few months to bring another bundle of love home, this time… a Bichon Frise puppy named Bella.

Baby Bella

I missed a lot of Bella’s “growing up” stages because I only got to see her when I went home to visit my parents. As a result, I feel like I don’t have the same connection to Bella as I did with Chance. I’m okay with that, though… because now Ryan and I have a little pupsqueak of our own now — Happy!

This is the life

And you all know how obsessed with her I am  :)

I’m saying all of this because I’ve learned that owning a dog of your own is a whole different experience than just being a child in a family that has a family dog.

Graduation from Puppy School :)

I’ve learned *so much* since the day we adopted Happy this past October, and I cant even express how much joy she has given me, and continues to give me each and every day. If I come home from a rough day at work, she can instantly put a smile on my face by tilting her head to one side. She always finds the perfect way cuddle up against my side, even if there seems to be no room at all. Despite her no-nonsense facade, she is quite the snuggle-bunny. (She will only admit this if she’s tired, though…otherwise it’s all fangs on deck!!)

Don’t be fooled…

I am not a snuggle-bug!

I am Sasha FIERCE

Not only does Happy keep me company when Ryan goes away on business trips, but she also keeps me company on my (shorter) runs. I love having such an enthusiastic running buddy who loves the outdoors just as much as I do!

I came across this poem and thought it’d be fun to share to other dog-owners/lovers out there…

Before I Was a Dog Mom

Before I was a Dog Mom:
I made and ate hot meals unmolested.
I had unstained, unfurred clothes.
I had quiet conversations on the phone,
even if the doorbell rang.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I slept as late as I wanted
and never worried about how late I got to bed
or if I could get into my bed.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I cleaned my house every day.
I never tripped over toys, stuffies, chewies
or invited the neighbor’s dog over to play.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I didn’t worry if my plants, cleansers,
plastic bags, toilet paper, soap or deodorant
were poisonous or dangerous.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I had never been peed on,
pooped on, drooled on,
chewed on or pinched by puppy teeth.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I had complete control of my thoughts,
my body and mind.
I slept all night without sharing the covers or pillow.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I never looked into big, soulful eyes and cried.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn’t stop a hurt.
I never knew something so furry and four-legged
could affect my heart so deeply.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I had never held a sleeping puppy
just because I couldn’t put it down.
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night
every 10 minutes to make sure all was well.
I didn’t know how warm it feels inside
to feed a hungry puppy.
I didn’t know that something so small
could make me feel so important.
Before I was a Dog Mom:
I had never known the warmth, the joy,
the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the
satisfaction
of being A Dog Mom.

Do any of you consider yourselves to be doggie-momma’s? Do you see your pet’s as furbabies, too? Did you grow up with animals? How did you spend your Mother’s Day?

Oh, Happy Day!

So, a part of me thinks I have some new readers (hey guys!) … or y’all are just commenting more… Either way,  I love it and I’m so glad you stopped/continue to stop by!

DSCF0597

They call me Happy… I pretty much run this place

Here on Happy Tales, each Sunday is deemed as Oh, Happy Day! and is used as a platform to brag… er…talk… about our little ball of energy. Want to see some more Oh, Happy Day! posts? Check ‘em out  here, here, here here and here.

Now that we’re well into February (seriously though…where did January go?), y’all might be wondering how our little Happinator is doing in obedience school. Well, I am pleased to report that she is doing pretty well!

DSCF2158

Sir, yes, SIR!

She certainly has picked up a few more commands… such as “stay” (…“stay” is the most important command in puppy school), “take it,” “leave it,” “drop it” and “come.”  When we practice at home, Happy has these commands down pat. But whenever we get into the puppy classroom setting (aka… a corral set up smack-dab in middle of PetSmart) Happy tends to get distracted by anything and  everything that is happening outside of the coral in the actual store.

What’s this now? A PetSmart worker rolling a cart full of merchandise to the back of the store? Happy’s attention is quickly diverted to the squeaky wheels of the cart.  A customer in the store randomly stops by to watch the class in session? Happy thinks it’s her new best friend and tries to get her to join the party.

DSCF1899

NOIZES!!! Wat iz DAT?!

DSCF2152

U herd it tu?

I don’t want to discredit her, though. Happy has, in fact, accomplished quite a bit in class… and she is by far one of our instructor’s favorites

The instructor, Anthony, says that he could get her to pay attention better and be more *obedient* in class, but he said that it would require being extra tough on her and breaking her happy-go-lucky spirit. Break her spirit, you say?Ummmm, no thank you! We love our pup little pup just as she is! As long as she’s good at home, that’s all the matters to me and Ryan.

Here’s a video Ryan took of Happy a few weeks ago to show Anthony what she is capable of.

Happy dominates “stay,” “sit,” “shake” and “nutmeg”

When Anthony saw this video last week, he was floored. In fact, he told us that if we could work Happy super hard this week and get her to “stay” for minutes on end, we can go ahead and move right into the intermediate classes next week and forget about the rest of the beginner classes.

Tonight’s class determines whether or not Happy can “skip a grade.” We worked quite a bit with her this week, but nothing too hard. I’ll make sure to report back with what Anthony decides… but to be honest, we’re perfectly content with her staying in the beginner classes.

In case the first video wasn’t entertaining enough… here’s yet another video. This one is from puppy class last week. You’ll see Anthony schooling all of the pups, ha! (Make sure to check out Happy on the far left).

Happy says: GIMME MORE TREATS!

Oh yes, tonight’s class should be interesting…

In the meantime, we’re all gearing up to watch some football over at Caitlin’s –She’s hosting a superbowl party, and we’re all so excited! That’s right, even the Happster get’s to come! Caitlin and I met up on Friday and Happy got to play with James and Maggie while Caitlin and I did some work.

Puppppies!

I’m sure tonight will be a puppy-lovefest, as I know there’s going to be at least 5 other pups there. Ohhh I can’t wait for the madness!

DSCF0630

Iz time fo sum FUH-BAHHH!!

Did/do any of you find that your pups do better at home than in a public setting? Who are you hoping to win the Superbowl? Do y’all have outfits for your pups for sporting events?

Hope y’all enjoyed the video’s!

Oh, Happy Day!

Whenever Ryan and I are out and about with the Happinator, we always get stopped and bombarded with questions. I say this as if it’s a bad thing — ha! It’s not, really.  I love talking about my little pupsqueak. She  is too cute for words and I love showing her off. Does that make narcissistic? Or proud? Self –absorbed? Er, Happy-absorbed? Whatevs. She makes me (okay,  and Ryan too…) happy. You get the point. Moving on…

Here’s an example of how these little exchanges sometimes go down:

Act 1, Scene 1: A walk in the park on a brisk, Fall afternoon with  Momma HappyTales, Poppa HappyTales and the oh-so-adorable Happster.

Enter Female bystander with one curious toddler in tow (and one crying baby attached to hip)

Toddler: blahhhhhHHHH PUPPYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

Female bystander: “Oh my goodness! What a cute dog! Is she a puppy? What is she? How big is she going to get? What’s her name?”

Momma HappyTales: “Aw thanks, her name is Happy.”

Happy: *stops dead in her tracks* — *tilts head*

Female Bystander: “Really…her name is Happy!? That’s so fitting! Just look at her”

Happy: *licks air* — *wags tail*… (and thus by default, wiggles whole body)

Momma HappyTales: “Yeah, we think so, too”

Poppa HappyTales: “She probably won’t get too much bigger, but the vet isn’t promising anything’”

Crying Baby: “wahhhhhhh”

Happy:    *dismisses baby* –*looks over to lake, sees duck* (wiggles some more)

Happy: “arf!” “woooroROOOOooooOOOoo” “RoooAaaarrrrFFF!”

Momma HappyTales: “The shelter called her a terrier mix. And the vet thinks she has a lot of border collie in her. I think maybe some pug, too…since her tail is like a curlycue”

Poppa HappyTales: *rolls eyes*  (Note: Poppa HappyTales does not think the Happster has any pug in  her, despite what Momma HappyTales may think”)

End  Scene

So yes, this happens pretty much every where we go with her — the dog park, normal park, parking lot… PetSmart, you name it. People love to try and figure out what she is.

Speaking of PetSmart, there’s bound to be more happy tales coming your way (maybe I’ll even do another one later tonight…?) This little pup is starting OBEDIENCE SCHOOL today!!! Oh I can’t wait to share how this goes down…

If you had to guess, what kind of mix would you say Happy is? (Note: I took Happy to the vet on Thursday and she weighed in at just under 13 pounds. And she is 6.5 months old. They don’t think she is going to get too much bigger, just going to fill out some more).

And another question — do any of you pet owners ever get stopped while you are out and about?  Do you ever get asked the same questions over and over again? What’s the strangest question you’ve been asked?
