By sea… or by land? The Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Expo

Well hot damn. Has it really been ten days since I ran the Savannah RNR Marathon? Coulda fooled me. These days are flying by. I’m pretty sure school has something to do with that. And the fact that I’ve written 3.5 papers in the past week. Mmhm. That explains why I’m just now recapping the race.

Seriously though. No excuses.

I am busy.

You know this. I know this.

Nevertheless, I have things to say. I want to capture the events of this race before the emotion leaves my head… because trust me. There was a whole lot of emotion during this run. That is why it is currently 1AM and I am whipping out this recap. Because if not now… then who knows when I’d get it done.

So if you want the hard facts… here they are:

Fact #1: I <3 Savannah. And need to go back and visit it during a not-so-crazy-busy weekend.

Fact #2: The race atmosphere was awesome. Crowd support? incredible. The course itself… well, let’s just say it was definitely lacking. Six miles (or whatever it was) on a legitimate highway does not scream “ideal marathon course”… at least, in my eyes.  Exit ramps and on ramps? No thank you, sir.

Fact #3: The actual marathon itself? It went great for me. Heck, I even PRed (but let’s be honest, that’s not too surprising considering my 1st marathon was on a notoriously hilly course, and this course was as flat as a pancake).

Fact #4: The race was full of many ups. But also many downs. Oh my word, were there ever downs. But I will get to that in my actual recap of the race. I’ve been thinking all week how to describe it. In fact, I’m still at a loss for words. But… the emotion is still there. It’s all still very tangible. I just wish I could express it better. I’m sure it’ll come with some more time. And I’ll talk about it in my next post. So be sure to check back. For now, that’s all I can find to say.

Anyway, I want to touch on the Race Expo in this post.

Ryan and I left for Savannah mid-morning on the day before the race. We dropped Happy off at her little doggy-paradise, and continued our way South to Georgia.

Our drive was quite smooth (no flat tires this time!) and without traffic, and we pulled into Savannah around 3:30PM.

image

We bebopped around the downtown area for a little bit. Savannah is a darling, little town. Truly, it is

IMG_4644

Do not ask me what this is. Because I do not know. I just thought it looked cool.

But then we realized just how many people were also doing the same thing. In this little town.

I present to you…

Exhibit A:

image

Ah yes… see that bridge there? That bridge led to an island. An island that was the home of the Convention Center – the building that was housing the packet-pickup. A place where all 23,000+ runners. Plus their families. And their cars…were wanting to get to. If you look super close in that picture, you can see bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Ryan and I actually avoided that traffic (I’ve heard stories that people were sitting in their cars for hours waiting to move…just even a few feet… to get across to the other side) by parking on the Savannah Side of the river on River Street.

At this point in time, we actually hadn’t realized that we had to somehow get ourselves across the river. We were under the impression that the convention center was on our side of the river. Turns out, we were way wrong.

IMG_4650

See that white building across the river?

That’s the convention center… AKA, our destination.

I guess this was their idea of a pre-requisite obstacle course to obtain the darn race-packets and race-bibs. Survival of the fittest, right?

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough room in my duffel-bag to pack my snorkel-mask… (because, duh, I brought my entire running wardrobe instead, remember?). So, instead of heading back to our car to sit in that lameass traffic, Ryan and I decided to be adventurous and take the ferryboat across the river.

image

Oh heyyyy there, ‘lil ferry boat (picture courtesy of Paula)

So, we stood in line for about 45 minutes and waited for our turn to board one of 2 ferryboats carrying people across.

IMG_4645

Ah yes, there most certainly is a line forming…

IMG_4646

Quite a big line, actually. Indeed.

Fortunately for Ryan, there was a lot to look at going on around us.

Like these really big boats…

IMG_4651

We’re talkin’ *mega-boats* people…

I, on the other-hand, did what I do best… and entertained myself by going clicker-happy with the camera.

IMG_4647

Ohh what’s this? Looks picture-worthy to me. Why not.

IMG_4655

aaand whatdya know. A self-portrait. It’s not like I don’t have enough of these.

IMG_4654

THINK FAST, boyfriend. Monkeyarm pic, FTW.

IMG_4657

And I guess I took some normal pictures, too. You know… some of the historic (and probably important) buildings on River Street

IMG_4649

And of course, another picture of the *still* growing line. Seriously does not do it justice.

Ryan and I were lucky we got in line when we did. By the time we boarded the ferryboat (around 5PM, I’d say) the line we were waiting in had quadrupled in size. I kid you not, folks. I’m afraid that the city of Savannah was a bit ill-prepared for the mass amounts of people (and cars), that tag along with Rock ‘n’ Roll marathons.

Nevertheless, we were finally on our way across the river, sans flippers.

IMG_4662

Yessss. Finally.

Once in the convention center, Ryan and I weaved our way to check-in where I picked up my race-bib.

IMG_4663

Then we made our way through even more people, and somehow ran into my buddy, Raul.

I honestly have no idea how he managed to spot me and Ryan, but I’m so glad he did.

You see, Raul’s story is quite the inspirational one. Just last year, Raul weighed something that was close to 300 pounds. On November 8th of last year, he decided he had had enough, and he was going to turn his lifestyle upside down, revamp his daily habits, and regain his health. Over the course of a year, Raul lost nearly 100 pounds and now is in the best shape of his life… not only physically (because let’s face it, he’s rockin’ a bodyfat % in the mid teens) but also mentally.

From Raul himself… (re: his Facebook page):

One year today ago I began my lifestyle transformation journey with Nick & Memi Goings. Since then we were able to experience what may seem as unobtainable results. From a max of 16 pushups to a full set of 70 controlled pushups, No chin up capability to 10 unassisted chin ups, an official weigh-in of 292 lbs to seeing 209.9 on the scale, 18 lbs of lean body mass increase, body fat down from 44%+to 17%, from 1-3 minutes on a stair-climber where my heart reached 200 bpm… to running a 1/2 Marathon with running coach Kelly Fillnow with my HR 165-170 bpm in 2:21:01 minutes. Today marks the start of the year to follow which I know will continue to bring more focused accomplishments. I’m so thankful for the change we all have access to if we just allow ourselves to experience it to the fullest. If you have any questions please ask. May today be the start of you’re very own lifestyle transformation journey.”

Raul is a production guy by trade and has been having his film-crew document his entire journey. This past July, I was introduced to Raul by one of the upper people at my worksite, the YMCA. He had been working with one of our wellness directors and was utilizing my office for his “check-ins” once a week. So over the course of a few months, I really got to know Raul (and hang with Nick Goings, a running back from the Carolina Panthers, several times as well. Ya know…No biggie. Actually, it really wasn’t. Because I totally don’t follow football. Nick got a kick out of this).

During one of my conversations with Raul, the topic of running came up. When I told him that I enjoyed running, his ears perked up. When I told him I had run several half marathons and a full marathon, and was about to begin training for another full marathon, his eyes lit up. I knew he wanted in on the experience, so I told him some more about the race. The next thing I knew,  Raul was dead-set on running the half-marathon – a goal his former-self never dreamed of achieving.

Needless to say, when we saw each other at the Expo, there were hugs abound. This race, and that weekend… (being exactly one year from when set out on his lifestyle transformation), was a big deal. He set me up with his camera crew and we had a little mini-interview, and of course… we chatted about our nerves for the race.

IMG_4671

Deer in headlights.

And of course, a photo-op happened.

IMG_4673

We’re excited. I promise.

After our little prerace pow-wow, Ryan and I continued zigzagging our way through the Expo.

To put it simply… we were underwhelmed.

IMG_4677

Cricket. Cricket.

This race expo didn’t hold a light to the Flying Pig Expo. And I was greatly surprised, considering it was a Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon, after all.

The vendors, overall, were okay. There were lots of different nutrition bar samples (the  Snicker Marathon bars were awesome!) sports-drinks samples, and clothing booths. But… there was something missing that I couldn’t put my finger on.  Perhaps it was the fact that one of my blogger-friends, Heather, was not able to make the event to work her her RunningSkirts booth due to an unexpected illness? That’s gotta be it (missed you, Heather!).

Ryan, on the other hand, found himself a neat little gadget that I still don’t quite understand how to use. And then we stumbled across yet another opportunity for a photo-op. So of course, this happened:

IMG_4675

I know. Such a poser. What else is new…

And with that, our Rock ‘n’ Roll Expo adventure was over. Proooobably not worth the 3-hour roundtrip. Just sayin’.

Our journey back across the river was much smoother. We only had to wait a fraction of the time that it took to originally get across, because at this point, the city had recruited one of their big touristy boats to shuttle people back and forth. Once we actually got across the river, I understood why.

IMG_4684

Headin’ on back to the other side…

The line we had originally waited in? Yeah, it was even longer than when we were shuttled over ourselves. Twice as long.

By the time we made it back across, it was 6:30PM, and the Expo was supposed to close down at 7PM. Needless to say, there were quite a few unhappy people still stuck in line. Thankfully, the people in charge of the Expo extended their hours until 8PM… but rumor has it that the vendors up and left once 7 rolled around. Hopefully they’ll fix that next year.

Once back at our car, Ryan and I headed to find some dinner. My heart was set on pizza somewhere, but at this point, we just wanted to grab something and head to our hotel and check in.

We spotted a Subway, ordered two foot-long subs, and headed to our hotel to check-in (finally!). We stayed at  the Holiday Inn Suites, located in Pooler, GA… a good 20 minute drive from the downtown area.

The staff was super nice and the room was pretty dang accommodating (seriously now, whyyyy are hotel beds always so damn comfortable?). The lobby also had these amazing cookies waiting for us (okay, maybe not just for *us,* but we still felt special). Homemade or not… whatever. I don’t discriminate (and neither does Ryan). They were ooey and gooey and had chocolate. Perfect night-cap before a big race.

Before we headed to bed, though, I wanted to make sure we knew where we were going in the morning. I know I mentioned in my last post that my biggest worry was not in regards to the run itself. Instead, I was most concerned about transportation to the start-line race-day morning.

Word on the street was that the roads leading into downtown Savannah were all going to be closed (for the most part, anyway), so racers were being strongly urged to take the semi-mandatory shuttles leaving from a local mall 20 minutes outside of downtown. Considering the fact that the city was such a clusterf*ck  (that’s for you, mom. I didn’t say it) earlier in the afternoon, I didn’t want to risk getting lost in addition to what was most likely going to be horrendous traffic.

Ryan…being the prince charming that he is (I’m saying this in all seriousness, y’all) was more than willing to help extinguish my race-morning fear of getting lost on the way to the mall. So, at 9:15PM, we headed out for a “test-drive” to where the shuttle pick-up was supposed to be.

Let’s just say, it’s a good thing we did this little “test-run.” (I’m sure you know where this is going).

The route we drove took us directly to the mall… but upon further investigation (read: driving around the mall-parking lot, total highschooler-style), we realized it was the wrong mall. Apparently, Savannah has two pretty big malls on the same dang road, just a few miles (but with stoplights, a good 15 minutes) apart.

Once we realized that the lack of busses was not a figment of our imaginations… (and that there was, in fact, a second mall on the same road – seriously, who does that?!) we kept on truckin’ until we located the second, and more importantly – correct, mall.

And with that, we spotted some busses.

Feeling at ease, we headed back to the hotel for a good night’s (HA!) sleep.

Except… I was too pumped full of excitement to fall asleep. So instead, I tried on a few options to run in, and Ryan sleepily gave advise on which race-day outfit to wear.

IMG_4689

Screw sleeping. Let’s run this town. RIGHT NOW!

Once I made my final decision, I set out my clothes and race fuel (and breakfast and snacks for the bus) on the floor so I wouldn’t miss ‘em come morning. After a long soak in the bathtub, I finally  headed to bed around 12:30AM.

For a 4:15AM wake-up call.

Yeah. So much for a good night’s sleep.

It’s a good thing I had an amazing night’s sleep the night before the night before the race. They always say that’s the most important night of sleep, anyway.

It’s Time for a CELEBRATION!

And celebrate we will!

Not only am I *officially* on summer break, but it’s also Ryan’s birthday!  (Oh, and I busted out my 12mile- longrun for the weekend early this morning, so I officially have ZERO things on my to-do list for the next few days! Definitely celebration worthy, in my book).

So yes.

Today, the mister turns the big 2-5 Smile

Movin’ on up!

We figured there’d be no better way to celebrate these events than with a vacation, sooooo… that’s what we’re doing!

Roadtrip to the *other* Cackalacky

For the next 5 days, we’ll be relaxing our faces off in good ‘ole Charleston, South Carolina. Good culture, good eats, good company. Sounds right up my alley.

And of course, The Battery

The only not-good (un-good? Who the hell knows, my academic-brain has been turned off since finishing up epidemiology the other day… just be thankful I’m not trying to communicate this blog-Post via smoke-signals) thing about this trip?

The fact that I have to spend my nights away from this face…

IMG_2603

Don’t leave me!

For the first time.

IMG_2628

Pah-leeeease!

Ever.

IMG_0976

Ohhhh Happs, your ears kill me *every* time.

I know I know. I’ve already talked about this before.

But…I am ridiculous. Straight up ridiculous. (Shocking, right?).

So ridiculous, in fact, that I’ve been tearing up the past few days at work just thinking about leaving my little pupsqueak behind.

IMG_2635

I’ll never let go, Happs

Remember when I initially brought up this little dilemma? Well, at least for this trip, we have an answer. The Happ’s is staying with my bud, Bobby and his boxer, Dakota. (In fact, Bobby is one of my fellow Chapel Hill classmates!).

I know Happy will have a rockin’ time prancing and running circles around Dakota, and she’ll probably even learn a few tricks (or 5) from being around her. Word Bark on the street is that Dakota is quite the smarty-pants.

Better yet, I bet Happy won’t even realize Ryan and I disappeared for the weekend. At least, I hope that’s the case. All I know is, Happy is in good hands. (And she’ll be one well-hydrated pup while we’re gone, thanks to Bobby’s non-profit/passion, NoFizzUSA.)

So tell me, have you ever been to Charleston, SC? Know of any “must-sees,” “must-do’s,” or more importantly… “must-eats”? Kaminsky’s is already on the list. We discovered the beauty of that dessert-bar the last time we were in Charleston… and Ryan has already declared that we’ll be frequenting it multiple times on this trip. Can’t argue with the birthday boy! T-minus 9 hours ‘til that tollhouse-chocolatechip-cookie–pie is mine.  Bring on the sugar-rush Smile with tongue out

I <3 Wilmington, NC

Oh dear. Considering the fact that our trip to Wilmington was over a week ago, I believe I am now officially a front-runner for “Worst Blogger of the Year Award.” It’s all good though, I own it.

I blog for me. I keep this baby running so I can reflect on things and share stories with family/friends who are far away. The telephone only goes so far when it comes to catching people up, and I think pictures speak a thousand words. (And yes, I realize there is facebook and that new google+ thing that I still do not understand despite signing myself up…but all of those things do not allow me to capture  and share anecdotes and stories in the way I’d like to). Anywho, I guess what I am trying to say is… if you are reading these words, thank you.

No really.

I truly appreciate you stopping by, and I hope that you find yourself entertained when you read my stories. I know my updates are sporadic, but it’s only because I blog when I feel inspired.

I mean, let’s be honest. I know y’all don’t really want to read about the crazy busy week I had at work…or the group module I moderated for my online class last week. And that huge epidemiology exam coming up tomorrow? Yeah, I know that’s only a mountain in my eyes. And I know y’all could care less about my yearly physical (and how much I adore–adoreeee!– my new doctor). I must say, though, I feel so blessed to have a clean bill of health with all the things going on in the blogworld.  However, the dermatologist appointment I have coming up in a few days has got me shaking in my boots.  But for now, I’ll keep my worries to myself. No need to dwell on speculation, right? Especially when there are more important things to reflect on… like last weeks trip to the coast!

Ohhhh yes.

I present to you, Our trip to Wilmington: (WARNING: Find yourself a comfy seat, as you’re in for some picture overload).

IMG_1814

MAHHHHMMMM! Where are we going this time?!?!

For the 4th of July weekend, our little famjam hightailed it to Wilmington, North Carolina, home of the set for Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill. Too bad I’ve never really watched a full episode of either of those shows… (Kind of funny when we’d run into locals and they’d proudly blabber on about said shows and wait patiently for an excited response, and I’d only return a blank stare.  Oh well.)

It was only about a four-hour ride, and a pleasant one at that. Anything under 6 hours to me is a piece of cake. (To put things in perspective, Ryan and I take 12-hour long road-trips every winter to Florida to visit my parents in South Florida. So 4 hours is like a warm-up. A stroll around the block, if you will. Err, I mean… the coast.)

IMG_1819

True daddy’s girl right there… dreaming of the World Cup. And steak. (duh).

Being the angel of a traveler she is, Happy was zonked out for half of the trip. I keep telling myself that my future kids are going to be absolute hellions because my first dog is such a sweetheart.

Somebody’s excited…

IMG_1823

And it’s not this guy…

IMG_1827

Party POOP-AH!

After a chillaxful drive, we finally reached the historic downtown of Wilmington. Oh my goodness y’all. This city is so charming. It reminded me a little bit of Charleston and Asheville, all at the same time. And the fact that it’s on a river, has tons of marshland, and a BEACH nearby? Uhhhh. Let’s just say this place was like a slice of heaven to me. You all (should) know how much I adore the water.

IMG_1831

Oh hey there, Battleship

Other things I love?

Tree Canopies.

IMG_1832

swoooooon

And old historic buildings.

IMG_2042

Hello, history

IMG_2043

Fancy

Ryan and I stayed at a Marriott that was equal distance to the beach and to the historic downtown. In a word, it was perfect. Every morning we’d get up for the (free!) breakfast, fill our bellies and head out to “the loop” before the heat of the day set in. This loop was like my dream come true. It was pretty much like a park, but I’d equate it to an adults playground. There were soccer fields galore, and Ryan would play soccer and kick the ball around with Happy while I’d run circles around him. That sounds weird. Let me paint a better picture. I wasn’t circling him like a shark while I ran my circles…I gave him his space and did my own thing on the 2.5 mile trail that looped around the park, the marshes and the beach. So I guess you could say I ran big circles around him. Like an orbit? Whatever. You get my point — it. was. amazing.

View from the Loop…

IMG_1848

IMG_1863

Better than coffee

IMG_1849

This loop was glorious, y’all. The running-route was just so peaceful. I am seriously missing it. You know that doctor’s appt I had last week? Yep, in addition to my physical, the Doc diagnosed me with “beach-withdrawal.” We all know what the Rx for that is. (You listening, Ry? We need to go back. Doctor’s orders. I hear it’s deadly if not treated right away.)

Our first night there we dined at the Oceanic, a waterfront restaurant with the most amazing views.

IMG_1840

On or way to dinner

IMG_1874

Everything about this place was amazing.

Check out the view from our table…

IMG_1880

Right.On.The.Water.

IMG_1878

Not too shabby, eh?

Instead of bread, they brought out hushpuppies (although, I kinda wished they brought out bread, too…). They also had this BALLIN’ seafood gumbo that melted my heart on the spot.

IMG_1882

After dinner, we had our hearts set on some froyo. Ever heard of Fuzzy Peach? Yeah, we hadn’t either. But now you have. And you should know that it is defreakinglicious.

Go here now.

In fact, that joint was so amazing that Ryan and I may or may not have hit that place up every single night we were in Wilmington (emphasis on the may have… don’t judge us).

Saturday Ryan and I hit up the Cotton Exchange, thanks to recommendations from you guys!

IMG_2143

IMG_1900

Words do not do this place justice. It was very eclectic and reminded me of my favorite district in Sydney, Australia—The Rocks. Oh, and there was a Fuzzy Peach right across the street… so you know that upped it’s “awesome-factor” tenfold.

IMG_1902

IMG_1910

IMG_1908

The inside was kind of “maze like” – a maze of shops, if you will.  I loved it.

They even had a store dedicated to Happy!

We found these fun-looking signs that I thought could be approriate for certain family members…

Haaa. Not naming any names for this badboy.

After the Cotton Exchange, we took a stroll along the Riverwalk.

Another picture of the Battleship…

IMG_1919

And us…

IMG_1921

(because you can never have too many!)

IMG_1922

Not having an agenda was so relaxing. I love vacations where you can just do anything, and everything, you want. And that’s just what we did.

IMG_1923

Rough life…

IMG_1930

Keeper.

I must move here…

IMG_1932

Because of the flexible nature of our “no-plan plan,” we were able to hop on a little boat cruise that took a tour of the river! That made me one happy girl, as you know I love my boat-time Smile

After the rivercruise we took a stroll along the historic streets of the downtown. It was approaching dinnertime, so Ryan suggested we stop and eat dinner before we embarked on the surprise he had planned. We chose to eat at Café Phoenix, and ohhhh my was that the best decision ever.

IMG_2037

We were seated at the grandma hour (read: 5:45) and had the whole place to ourselves. I loved the individual attention of the waitstaff. And the food? Ohhhmylord, don’t even get me started. Y’all know this is not a foodblog by any means but I cannot NOT talk about this meal. It was to die for. And the ambiance of the restaurant was pretty staller, as well.

It all started with a loaf of bread (x2 because, uhh, we <3 carbs) olive oil, and vinegar

IMG_2026

So doughy. SO good.

Then came the appetizer…a pickled plate of fresh, local veggies. (And by local, I mean from the chef’s very own backyard.)

IMG_2027

The pickled plate. SODAMNGOOD

IMG_2028

Want.

Then came my cup-o-soup

IMG_2032

The freshest Gazpacho your tastebuds have ever met

And to top it all off? The best entrees ever. I’m talkin Lick-yo-plate-clean delicious.

IMG_2033

My entree: Blackened grouper over ratatouille

And Ryan’s…

IMG_2034

Idontevenknowwhatthisis except for the fact that it was GOOD!

After such a spectacular meal, we had to commemorate the experience with a picture.

IMG_2036

duh

Then it was time for the surprise that Ryan had planned for us…

The symphony!

IMG_2050

Yes, you read that right. Ryan and I spent a wonderful night listening to the North Carolina Symphony! We were probably the youngest ones in the audience by ohhh, about… 30 years, but it was such a great experience! In fact, it reminded me of home. My mom and stepdad have a tradition of going to the symphony for the Cincinnati Pops 4th of July Concert every year, and when I was a youngin’, they’d bring me along. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned that to Ryan, so the fact that he picked the 4th of July as the time of year to take me to see a symphony brought out the warm fuzzies.

As always, I had to hold back (major) tears when they played the traditional military marches to honor all of the serviceman. The Veterans in the audience stood up when the march for their branch was played – it seriously gets me every time. (Lot’s of my family has served in the military, so I always picture them standing up during their songs – Navy and Air Force, predominantly). I’m pretty sure I shed a few tears. All of the old men were just SO proud. I told Ryan after the show that it’s a good thing they don’t plant recruitment officers outside the doors, because I’d probably sign up on the spot.  Sidenote: Is anyone else like this? Oh, and you know those military recruitment commercials? Yeah, well they solicit the same response in me. Every time I see one of those military spots on TV and see people jumping outta helicopters, I take one look at myself sitting on the couch and think “Yesss, bring it!” I mean heck, I’ve already jumped out of a plane…and loved it. What a rush. Annnnd then I realize bootcamp would probably crush my soul. On day one. I guess my year in AmeriCorps can count as serving my country, right?  (On a more serious note, I realize the military is something to take seriously, and nothing like a simple skydiving excursion on a study abroad trip… so no need to lecture me. I know serving our country is a one of the hardest jobs out there, and something I doubt I’d be cut out for. So thank you for those of you who serve and protect, or who have family members who are in the service).

Annnnyway… after my emotional rollercoaster of patriotic pride, we found ourselves at Fuzzy Peach.

IMG_2052

Surprise…surprise…

Sunday morning was very similar to Saturday — spending time at the loop and enjoying the beachy scenary. By lunchtime, we found ourselves back in historic downtown Wilmington. We were on a hunt for a trolley ride.

IMG_2053

Searchin’ high…

IMG_2055

Searchin’ low

IMG_2056

Ohhh, what’s that over there? Horses?!

We actually stumbled upon a horse-drawn carriage tour, and decided it’d be the perfect way to see more of the city and learn about the history. So, off we went!

The tour was very well done and the guide was super knowledgable. And the best part?!?  The horses that drove the tour were rescues!

This pink house actually reminds me of the house I grew up in.  Ohhh yes. The house I lived in for 18 years in Ohio was pastel pink with white trimming and dark green shutters. We had a palm tree in our dining room, and a pool in the backyard. Now do you see why my mom lives in South Florida for half the year?

Love the Victorian houses. Sooo much.

And this color scheme!? I die.

After the tour, Ryan and I headed to the Riverwalk where we stumbled upon a sidewalk craftshow.  I spotted a necklace and couldn’t walk away without it. I fell in love with it on the spot. In fact, I’ve already worn it 3 times in the past week.

Condos right on the river. I want to live here.

Once we got back from our afternoon excursion, we decided to take the pupsqueak to the local dogpark.

Got my towel, I’m ready to go!

This dogparks kicks Charlotte’s dog park’s ass. By a landslide. Not only did it have huge sand dunes for the pups to climb on, but it had tunnels for them to run through. Annnnd it was 3x as big.

New friends

Considering the fact that I had blown off my studies for the majority of the weekend already, I decided to be a good student and bring along some work. Especially since I was moderating the assignment for the week. You know… no big deal.

After the dogpark, we headed back to the riverfront for an amazing dinner overlooking the water. This time, we dined at Elijah’s.

Aaaaand this was our view…

I mean really, do you expect anything less?

The next morning was the 4th of July! We woke up, ate brekkie and headed  out one last time to “the loop” and took in the beach. After lunch, we hit the road and headed home back to Charlotte

When can we come back?????

It’s safe to say that all three of us greatly enjoyed this trip. Something about Wilmington is just so special. It’s not too big, not too touristy and overall it is a very charming town. I know I loved it… I mean heck, it’s a week later and I’m still relishing in the post-vacation glow!

Oh hey there, new necklace

Back to reality. Back to the books.

And if you thought you saw the stick making an appearance… you were right.

That baby travels well.

Once home, our little pupsqueak got a bath to wash away any critters that coulda been tagging along.

And then of course… fireworks happened. In between a few storms. (This is Charlotte in the summer time, afterall!).

Do you have any 4th of July traditions? Do you have any family in the military? Do those army commercials make your adrenalin rush? Have you ever fallen in love with a vacation spot and “missed” it like whoa upon return?
