The Verdict Is In!

Remember how I’ve been playing the waiting game ever since those two biopsies were taken off my leg and back?

Well, I finally got my results…

…and let off a huge sigh of relief!

Thankfully, no malignancies were found. They did note, however, that the biopsies indicated evidence of dysplasia in both biopsy sites. Because of this they recommend I get my skin checked every six months. Note taken. See ya in the New Year, Doc.

They also informed me about this new type of technology called MoleSafe. They said I’d make a good candidate because I’m… well, mole-y. How scientific of them. Glad to know I’m not the only Captain Obvious here in Charlotte.

So, what is MoleSafe, exactly?

Well, according to their brochure, “Molesafe is a worldwide service that utilizes a new technology to perform a comprehensive full-body check-up to assess your skin, using digital imaging and dermoscopy scans to produce a digital melanogram. This melanogram is then examined and diagnosed by a MoleSafe dermatologist. Regular follow-up examinations refer to your stored melanogram and allow comparisons of the scans over time, detecting any problems at an early stage. In fact, MoleSafe’s diagnosis can be more accurate than a regular clinical inspection.”

Pretty neat, huh? Unfortunately, I am not financially able to start the Molesafe process (it costs hundreds of dollars for the initial high-resolution digital imaging, dermoscopy scans and body-mapping), so I have plenty of time to research this new-to-me process. But it’s definitely something I will keep in mind.

Anywho, I’m so relieved to have good news. The waiting period flew by thanks to my busy schedule. I’m also healing quite well.

Not too shabby.

But I still think it’s going to leave a scar. Oh well. Scars are for the living. They tell stories. I’m sure I’ll have more to come in my future. And I’ll be proud of each and every one of them. I’ll gladly be a walking symbol for skin-cancer awareness. Just like my momma and her “pepperoni.”

Oh, Happy Day!

Hey there, folks. Happy Sunday!

Hope y’all are staying cool Smile And for those of you who are in parts of the world that are experiencing mild temperatures, let me just say… I am  jealous. Because unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re pr0bably well aware that a good portion of the US is suffering from a horrendous heat spell.

Yes, I realize it is summer time. And with that comes hot temperatures.

I know. Go ahead and call me Captain Obvious. It's fine.

But you know what else summer brings, especially to those of us in the good ‘ole South?

Humidity.

Ohhhh yes. Humidity in the South is like none I’ve ever experienced. Trust me. I’m a girl with curls and therefore a walking barameter.

Let’s just say, the only other place my curls get this curly is when I’m at the beach. You know… at sea-level. Or on a cruise ship. (boats! Swoon).

A girl can dream, right?

Sadly, I am neither at the beach nor on a cruise ship, as I am currently landlocked (for the most part) in Charlotte. And according to my (curly-haired) calculations, the humidity has been crazy as ever this summer.

I’ve lived in the South for a good 7 (or is it 8? I’ve lost track…) years and I’ve learned that you simply cannot fight the heat. You just have to embrace it, and do what you can to stay cool from April through October (because yes, temperatures truly are crazy-hot for an extended period of time down here).

You know what this also means? It means that you pet-owners out there have the added responsibility of making sure your furbabies stay cool. They don’t have vocal cords like us humans to complain when they’re thirsty and whine when they want to come inside. So do them a favor and make sure water is available at all times.

The following are some tips on how to make sure you can keep your furbaby cool and hydrated during this hot-as-hades summer weather…

-Summer is the season for traveling, so if you’re hitting the road with the pupsqueak in tow, make sure you have a water-bowl on hand. There’s even some pretty handy collapsible travel bowls that you can tote along with you to keep fido hydrated during a hike or walk at the park.

-Speaking of traveling, never (ever!)  leave your dog in the car unattended. Even if you think it’ll just be for a minute. Just.Don’t.Do.It. ExclamationPoint.

-Ever play dress-up with your dog? No? Well now’s the perfect time to start! Grab yourself a bandana, douse it with water and stick it in the freezer for a half hour or so. Tie it around your fido’s neck and watch your pup sink into a huge sigh of heat-relief. Heck, this sounds like a great idea for humans, too. (Hello, crazy marathon training long runs…).

Not so much...

-If your dog is primarily outdoor dog, consider bringing him inside during the heat of the day. If he must stay outside, make sure there is plenty of shade and water available at all hours of the day. Better yet, invest in a kiddie-turned-doggie pool and fill-er-up with the backyard hose. Your dog will love you forever. Promise.

C'mon in! Whatcha waitin' for?

-One word: ice-cubes. That’s right folks, something as simple as a piece of ice can provide cool and refreshing entertainment. Happy loves the damn things, and paws them around the kitchen floor like a wannabe hockey player. It’s quite funny. And if you’re feeling super-giving, you can even invest in toys that are made to be frozen. I’m sure they work almost as well as icecubes Smile with tongue out

DOGS AND ICECUBES

-And one last thing I’d like to touch on that I feel can be over looked: walking your dog on pavement/sidewalks. Have you ever been to the beach at high-noon, kicked off your flipflops to dig your toes in the sand only to find yourself wincing in pain from the surprisingly hot, burning, sand? Yeah. Not the best feeling in the world… is it? So do your dog a favor and walk him shaded areas… or better yet, the grass!

Of course, this is not a complete list by any means. These tips are just a few important tidbits I thought I’d pass along. Feel free to share your own advice in the comments! I’m all about new and inventive ways to make sure furbabies are as comfortable as can be in this crazy hot weather.

Be Smart… Run Smart

In honor of the summer heat, I wanted to relay a few tips to y’all about how to be smart and run smart in extreme temperatures. Because if you’re anything like me, you’ll run in pretty much anything.

Sub freezing temperatures?

Bring it.

Yes, the nippy temperatures might be uncomfortable at first, but trust me, you’ll be nice and warmed up within 5 minutes. What’s more is the fact that stores now carry super-cute thermal-wear to help keep ya warm throughout the duration of winter runs. Oh, and there’s also hand-warmers if things get desperate.

Temperature regulation = one glove on, one glove off. I swear by this.

Snow and ice on the ground? Not a problem. They make spikes for that. (Really, they do).

Don't mess with a hardcore runner. They're probably equipped with spikes. And spikes to the face hurt.

You non-runners out there must think runners are craaazy for wanting to run when it’s not a comfortable temperature outside. And I am not denying that fact one little bit. I like to run year-round. Outside.

To me, running indoors on a treadmill is boring. I feel like a hamster going around, around and arouuuund on one of those spin wheels.

Plus, feeling trapped really ain’t my thing. If I’m at the gym, I’m either lifting weights or crosstraining with a bodypump-class or spin-class. I just can’t make myself run inside. I’ll take the freedom of an outside run any day. And yes, that means even on garbage-truck days. (Anyone else out there play the racing game against the garbage trucks? Just me? Awesome.)

Running during the summer time is a little different. You can’t exactly take layers off when, you know, you’re *already* wearing the bear minimum.

So with that said, here are some tips from the Wellness Coalition of America on how to be smart while you log those miles outside during the wretched, summer heat.

“As you exercise, your body generates heat that must be released into the environment.  So exercising in high temperatures can have dangerous results, such as dehydration or heat illness.  If you have a chronic disease such as heart disease or asthma and your heart and/or lungs are already working harder, proceed with even more caution when exercising in the heat and humidity.

If the temperature and humidity add up to 150 or higher, use caution when exercising outside during the day.  (For example, if the temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity is 70%, the sum of the two equals 150, therefore you should postpone your outdoor activities until it is cooler.)”

Here are a few tips to alleviate the effects of the heat:

  • Wear clothing that allows for heat loss and sweat evaporation (made with dry-fit material).
  • Reschedule exercise for a cooler time of day (mornings or evenings; avoid exercise between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the sun is at its highest intensity).
  • Relocate exercise to a shady, breezy site or indoors where there’s air conditioning.
  • Reduce exercise intensity, and add rest and water breaks.

Moving right along.

Lucky for me, the weather this week in Charlotte has been pretty amazing. In fact, I’d call it balmy. (And when I say “balmy,” I mean mid 80s with low humidity– it’s all relative, people!). Usually, Charlotte is a high of 95, with a heat index over 100 and a humidity of sick-nasty high. So this balmy weather has been a nice little break from the Southern summer heat.

You know what also makes me a super Happy girl today?

Oh hellllllll yes.

Today Ryan and I are going saaaailing!  His good buddy Jon (slash old roomie, slash coworker) volunteers for a sailing club on Lake Norman, and he offered to take me and Ryan out on the lake. Talk about awesome. I melt for boats. All kinds of boats – speed boats, canoes, pontoon boats, kayaks, cruiseships (ohhh I <3 cruising, hinthint cough.hacking.smokers.cough.cough.) I think you get the idea.

So, today should be pretty epic. Especially since the last time I went sailing I was probably about 3 or 4 years old.

Mini-me

Actually, I was three and a half. I know this because my mom reminds me of this trip quite often. We were visiting my Aunt and Uncle who lived on the Chesapeake Bay at the time, and we all piled onto my Uncles sailboat and went sailing for the day. We were having a grand ‘ole time chatting away and catching up (well, the adults were… I was the lone 4 year old on the boat, waddling around the deck like a drunken sailor trying to keep my balance) and enjoying the lovely sunshine…that is, until I threw my beloved windup-toy-bear over the side of the boat.

Shoulda gone with the Sailor Bear…

I remember watching it arc through the air and slide into the water… and use it’s arms to swim the backstroke. “Wooo, look at bear go!” I probably thought to my 3.5 year old self. And then I realized Mr. Bear was going in the wrong direction. I guess I thought nothing bad could come from throwing him into the water, because after all, he was a wind-up swimming bear, he belonged in the water… duh. I’m sure that’s the reasoning I told my mother as I cried and pointed to Mr. Bear back-paddling away from the sailboat.  Let’s just say I had my first geography (oceanography? who the hell knows…) lesson at a pretty young age. I learned that the Chesapeake Bay is not the size of my bathtub, and things thrown into said body of water will not find their way back into my little hands, even if they are the best little wind-up-toy-swimming bear out there.

Hopefully today’s little sailing excursion will go better than the last time…Smile with tongue out
