December Babies: The 26th Edition

Happy Saturday!!

It’s been quite some time since I last posted. I know I said I would recap my post-Savannah Marathon shenanigans the next time I wrote, but… life has sort of gotten in the way. And because so much (SO much) has happened in these past few weeks, I just had to pop in and share. (But don’t you worry, I’ll recap the post-marathon activities soon enough. Just let me get through finals, first).

Moving on…

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but the time between Halloween and New Years Day is by far my most favorite time of year. And this year’s holiday season is no different. So far,the month of December has been treating me  exceptionally well. It’s hard to believe we are only 10 days in!

In fact, November was pretty dang snazzy as well. Ryan and I hosted family during the two weeks surrounding Thanksgiving — it was so nice to catch up with everyone. Ryan’s  Dad flew into town and stayed with us for a long weekend the week before Thanksgiving.

IMG_4911

And just a few days later, Ryan’s mom and stepdad stayed with us for an extended Thanksgiving Holiday. They helped us cook up a storm in the kitchen for a delicious T-giving meal, and they braved the mall and snagged some pretty good Black Friday deals with us, too (and people watched, of course!).

IMG_5168

Our time spent hosting family was so much fun, and so needed. (Sidenote: I’m not sure how this happened, but I somehow managed to stay on top of all my schoolwork while everyone was here. Let’s just call it a pre-Christmas miracle? Yep. Sounds about right). Anywho, I feel so at home with Ryan’s family, and am excited to head to Arkansas over the Christmas Holiday to spend even more time with them. (Don’t you worry though, I’ll be able to spend time with my own mom and step-dad come January, as Ryan and I will be heading down to South Florida to spend some R&R on the beach for a week. I know. We sure do have it rough Smile with tongue out).

In other news, I treated myself to a handy little new gadget. Some call it the iPhone. I call it…life-changing.

pic.twitter.com/ZhYtACb6

[I also treated myself to this new jacket. And took a picture of it with my new iPhone. Oh, the wonders of technology!!!]

Seriously y’all. This little iPhone device is unreal. I thought the Droid was cool, but this? Nothing even compares. Thank goodness for Verizon’s “new every two”… and a credit that popped outta nowhere. Siri is one BAMF, and oh-so-entertaining.

Also. I bought the three books of the Hunger Games series.

http://www.mediamikes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Hunger_Games_and_Catching_Fire.jpg

I’ve been hearing good things from a variety of different people, so I just had to dive in and see what all the talk was about.

Sigh.

This was not a good life choice on my part.

Considering the fact that I was (and still am) in the midst of “crunch time” for my school work, I knew better. But let’s be real. I have no will power. So even though I *promised* myself I wouldn’t touch the first book until I had all of my assignments turned in… I caved.

I read that first book in two days. TWO DAYS, people.

During those two days, I was supposed to be writing 2 graduate school papers, completing a group project… working, and getting the house ready for our second set of visitors. Because that’s what big-kids do.

So guess what was sacrificed? Oh… you know, just that little ‘ole thing called sleep. But I promise, this was not intentional. You see…usually, I read myself to sleep. But the Hunger Games books do not allow for that. They are just too damn good for you to want turn off the light and get some shuteye. They are the epitome of page-turners. I don’t care if you judge me for reading them. Because I was judgmental, too. And now?  I’ve completed the first two books, and am halfway through the third. I won’t be surprised if I’m done with the third book by the end of the weekend. Did I mention I’m in the middle of finals right now? Don’t worry, I got my priorities straight.

Speaking of finals… I’m actually completely finished with one of my classes – my Program Planning and Evaluation class. This class was all-around amazing. I loved my professors, I loved my group-mates, and the girls in my group were some of the best classmates I have ever had. EVER.

I am genuinely sad that that class is over. But it’s nice to have a little more free time. My group decided to turn in our final group project early (the due-date is this coming Tuesday, but we actually turned it in this past Wednesday)… and we’ve already heard back that we achieved a 99%. AND! The professors have dubbed our project the new “model” to showcase to future classes when explaining the project. Unreal. And to top things off, I just got word that the big individual paper I had turned in this past week for the same class received a 99% as well. Here’s to hoping this streak of good grades rolls over into my other class… At least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel – as this coming Tuesday is the last day of the Fall semester Smile. I’m so close!

Soo yes. As you can see, SO MUCH has happened these past few weeks. So much, in fact, that I didn’t even know where to begin with this post. There’s actually more to the story than this, though (oh my lord I WISH I could talk about it, but for now, I can’t go into it too much). All I can say is… that there are (most likely) some big changes on the horizon, and I am more than ready for it.

I am receptive to this change, and although it is bitter-sweet, I am extremely excited about it. Everything I’ve been through thus far has brought me into this situation, and I feel like it is right. I feel so content in life. Everything feels in place. Sure, I at times feel anxious, nervous, and unsure…but I mostly feel excited… and very optimistic.

http://miketoner.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/ghandi1.png

Words to live by.

So, I guess this post is my attempt to “freeze time” and bottle up all of the emotion and positive feelings going on this little head of mine. I’ll make sure to update y’all if and when this change happens.

Oh, I almost forgot! There is another reason why I am so fond of this time of year—it’s because I am a December Baby!

http://www.fremontdads.com/images/santa-baby-web.jpg

Totally not me...

http://happytalesblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/cute-little-baby-santa.jpg?w=198&h=133

...but totally adorable!

That’s right, folks. Today, I am 26 years young.

http://blogs.babycenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/birthdaycakeflickr-300x200.jpg

IMG_5178

Me and all my 26-year-old glory…

Ah  yes, twenty-six…it’s crazy to think, but back when I was a little wee one, I used to think 26 sounded so old. To me, people who were 26 had their shit together. They had a house of their own, a big career, nice car,  401K, marriage, kids…the whole shebang. Obviously, I have none of these things.

But you know what?

I am perfectly fine with that.

Like I said, I have a feeling there is change right around the corner. Change that is going to bring some amazing things. Change that would not have been available to me if the situation would have been any other way. So to me, it is obvious…. I am right where I am meant to be.

And twenty-six is going to be a damn good year.

Rewind: Halloween

Happy Halloween… November?

So… I had the best intentions of creating a Halloween-inspired post last week, but life sorta got in the way.

And then I told myself I’d put a post up this past weekend… but Pinterest sorta got in my way. Talk about a serious time-suck.

http://happytalesblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/pinterest1.jpg?w=406&h=290

Midnight already? Whoops, productivity... out the window.

I signed up for that baby in August and somehow avoided wasting my very rare (and precious) free-time to “pinning” over these past few months. Well, that is… until this past weekend. I don’t know how it happened. But it did. And now I’ve pinned quite a number of things to inspiration boards. There are just too many creative ideas floating around on that website for my own good. Oh well. At least I feel, crafty? inspired? refreshed? Why yes, all of the above. And perhaps a little bit obsessed. But you know what? That’s okay. I have a feeling the website will come in handy at some point in the future.

Anyway, as you can see, I’ve been keeping myself plenty busy. And it’s a good thing, considering it’s my taper-time. Did I mention the Savannah RNR Marathon is in FOUR days? Because it is. And I am just itching  to get out there and run. Tapering = one heck of a mental game.

http://happytalesblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/zzzzz.gif?w=250&h=215

Yep. About right.

So… what have I been occupying my time with? Well, let’s see…

-Work (duh).

-Midterms. Enough said.

-Finishing said midterms and subsequently hitting the “off” button on my brain for a few days. What? You’d do it too. Trust me. Typing on a computer is not exactly my idea of “fun” after busting out  analytical papers on how to increase financial transparency within Local Public Health Agencies in hopes of improving sustainability…  and creating program-plans to decrease the incidence of cardiovascular disease among white males, 40-60 years of age with an annual salary less than $50,000/year. And because I let my brain rest for a few days (thank you, Pinterest), I am completely refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of my coursework through the end of the semester.

-Receiving word last week that I have been awarded more scholarship money for the academic year. My reaction: Homigod say WHAT?!? I seriously was not expecting this at all. Words cannot express how grateful/blessed/elated I feel.  And to top that off? I just heard back that I received a 98% on one of my midterms. Something tells me it’s time for a serious celebration.

What else…?

Oh yes!

-Celebrating the 3-year anniversary of when Ryan and I met (Oct. 23rd, if you’re curious…) by spoiling ourselves with a professional couples-massage (so.damn.relaxing), dinners out, late-night TCBY runs (we’re kinda addicted), and Redbox movie-nights. I highly recommend the movie “Hanna” if you haven’t seen it. Don’t worry, I hadn’t ever heard of it either. But it’s action packed and kept me on my toes. Bridesmaids on the other hand? Totally over-rated. Sure, it was funny. But I was expecting so much more from all of the hype surrounding it.

-Enjoying girly-nights in w/ the Happster because Ryan once again traveled a bunch for work this past month and found himself jet-setting all over the country.

IMG_4299

Ima sleep RIGHT HERE. Because this spot, well...it smells just like a certain someone.

IMG_4292

So don’t you dare touch me!

IMG_4286

He's the man

IMG_4079

Markin' my territory.

IMG_4072

That’s right, who’s Alpha dog *now*

Okay, so maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration…as Ryan only went to Chicago (twice) and Orlando (once). But still. I missed him. And Happy (obviously) missed him, too. All of that travel within the span of 3 weeks sure does add up to feel like a lot. Perspective, people.

And that brings us to now.

Thankfully, Ryan is officially back in the great state of North Carolina for the time being, and he got home just in time to celebrate Halloween! In fact, I had quite the scare surprise for him when he got back from his most recent trip to Chicago.

On the evening he returned, I was scheduled to get my hair cut. I went to the same girl as last time (seriously love Crystal!) and had the same thing done (dyed, cut)…except, it didn’t turn out the same way. Here is a reminder of how I looked post-haircut last time.

IMG_1028

This time around, when Crystal used the hair-dryer diffuser-extension-thing… she was not pleased with the end product. I was one big ‘ole frizzball of a mess (ohmylord I seriously  wish I had brought my camera with me to capture that scene…). I wasn’t really phased by the result, though. I knew my “normal” bouncy, curly self would return once I washed it again back at home and let my hair air dry.

(Sidenote: If there’s one thing I’ve learned about curly hair over the years – it’s that you let it do it’s own damn thing.  I don’t even own a brush or a comb. Ryan finds this amazing).

Nevertheless, Crystal was not having my frizzball ‘fro, and point-blank refused to let me walk out of the salon looking like I had just been electrocuted by her hairdryer.

So what does a hairstylist in distress do? Apparently, forego said client’s normal hair texture and blow the hades out of said hair until a desired texture is achieved.

Annnnd… that’s what she did.

Crystal sat me back down, washed my hair for a second time, and blow-dried (blew-dried? whatever… this is not a graduate school paper, I know you get my point) my hair straight. STRAIGHT, people. I kid you not: I left that place with straight hair. Kinda perfect timing for Halloween… eh?

Anyway, when I got home from the salon… Ryan was already home. He was outside in the front yard walking Happy when I pulled up in my car. He smiled, waved and leaned down to pick up Happy as I got out of my car…and when he returned back upright, he nearly toppled over again by what he saw (read: me. With straight hair).

All he could say was “Your hair…it’s… straight? How did the… wha, whwhat in the?… it’s straight?” I died. Seriously, it was the funniest reaction ever. And the look on his face? Priceless. (SERIOUSLY.. why didn’t I have my camera on me?!?). But really,  I don’t blame him for his reaction. In fact, my straight haired self seemed so different from the usual curls, that I used it as part of a Halloween costume. Check it out for yourself.

But first…I present to you: normal person pictures.

IMG_4388

Okay, so maybe not exactly “normal”…

IMG_4317

But you get the idea

IMG_4371

Yep, straight = a bit strange

Anyway, like I said, I incorporated the straight hair into a (really really cliché) Halloween costume.

IMG_4610

Yeah. I know. How original.

BUT! I couldn’t resist. I was inspired by Happy’s costume. And because she tagged along with me and Ryan to Zack’s Halloween party… it just made sense.

IMG_4583

Cowdog/bull/bronco? With Farmer Randy (according to Ryan)

IMG_4589

Seriously now, who *wouldn’t* want to dress like me?!?!

And thus, I present to you… the Halloween Costume I threw together after work in about 5 minutes flat:

IMG_4592

Cowgirl and her bucking…bronco? bull? cow? Happinator?

IMG_4601

Oh what a loving beast that Happinator is…

Sure enough, my mighty beast soon turned into a scaredy-cat once we got to Zack’s house. Apparently Happy is terrified of obnoxious festive Trick-or-Treaters.

IMG_4538

WHAT WAS THAT?!

IMG_4534

Shmeeeeee there is so much going on! must.run.in.circles!

In time though, she relaxed. This was our first time bringing her to Zack’s new house, and let’s just say, Ryan and I cannot wait until the day we have our own home. Hello, over-the-top festive décor, renovation projects, and huge fenced-in back yards (for Happy to roam, of course).

IMG_4572

IMG_4568

The boys. Doing their thing.

IMG_4541

The guys did a pretty good job scaring the rowdy elementary/middle schoolers, and went “easy” on the little ones.

IMG_4553

Little baybays. Playin’ it cool.

IMG_4551

Julia: the official candy-passer-outer.

IMG_4555

Job well done

IMG_4540

Sarah: Eerie-Music-Player and Smoke-Machine-Worker Extraordinaire

Obviously, it was a team effort.

And of course, the fellas took the liberty in judging when to go “all-out” with their scare tactics (ie. creeping up to the kids, hiding behind shrubs, using “the rake”). And when a truckload full of kiddos stopped in front of Zack’s house, the guys went all out and even had the moms waiting for the return of their kids in the flatbed of the truck letting out screams. Probably the highlight of my night.

IMG_4542

Creepin’ on the truck

IMG_4548

So blurry… but so damn funny! That kid was RUNNING for his life! Screams galore.

I’m so glad I got to celebrate Halloween this year (last year I was stuck at home writing a paper for grad school). But… I am sad that Halloween happens only once a year. I love any excuse for a costume party. I just need to work on the whole costume thing.

Oh well, now that Halloween has passed… my sights are on even bigger and better things. It’s  *officially* the Holiday season! Hell.to.the.yessss.

IMG_4536

Sara’s excited.

IMG_4574

And from the looks of it... these two are, too

These next few months are going to be so jam-packed with fun, family, (work), and play.

First up? The Savannah RNR Marathon! T-minus 4 days, baby.

Did you have a festive Halloween? What’s your best costume to date? Have you ever thrown together a last-minute costume? What’s your favorite Holiday?

What I’m Falling For

Why, hello there! It’s been a while, eh?

I know I said I would recap my recent trips to Charleston and the Healthy Living Summit (and don’t worry, I will!) but, man… sometimes I wish there were more hours in the day! I feel like I’ve finally settled into a nice routine of work/school/life, and now that I’ve had a mental vacation from, well, everything… I feel inspired to update the ‘ole blog.

So what have I been up to these past few weeks? Oh you know… the usual. I’ve pretty much been busying myself with doin’ what I do best (that’s code for: chillaxin’, schooling, working, playing, Happying, running, eating, cleaning and sleeping. You get the picture, I’m sure).

So as you can see, things have really picked up these past few weeks since my two classes have started. I’ve already acted as moderator for both of these classes, so now I get to sit back and let my fellow classmates have their turn. I truly love this whole team-work collaboration thing that envelopes the public health field. Really, I thrive on this stuff. Interacting with others who are passionate about the same things I am makes my heart go pitter-patter over and over again. And being this busy makes me feel like I have so much to offer… so much purpose. Just wait, y’all. Just you wait. Big things…they’re a’coming.

Want to know some other things that are making my heart-a-flutter these days? Why, of course course you do!

IMG_0976

Spill it, sista. I’m all ears.

-School. (duh). Yes, I know I just mentioned this above, but I am the biggest generk you’ll find.

generk: gaa-nerk (noun)  1. a person who embodies the qualities

of a geek, nerd and dork, all at the same time.

My goodness, that Bertha Sue… she studies so hard! She

must be one of the  biggest generks I know.

(Note: a few college buddies and I made this term up. Obviously, we are the epitome of  ”generks.”)

Seriously. Just ask anyone who went to high school or college with me, and they’ll give ya a big, fat “affirmative” on that one. Anywho, I am absolutely, 100% *loving* my classes. Sure, I liked Epidemiology and Biostatistics alright… but let’s be honest. It was a struggle. This new stuff? Health program planning and evaluation, global health issues, intervention strategies and quality assurance?

http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2w1r6ZuAzUU/S6g7L8CLsHI/AAAAAAAAAtE/GsznkUGPWTA/Green%252520Yes.jpg

This is where it's at.

-The fact that my office has officially made the move to the main area of the fitness floor, and we are finally all settled into our new space. This was a big task. My wellness team is made up of 4 people: 1 fulltime, 2 part-time, and 1 full-time nurse, staffed by the local hospital. It was a lot to get us all moved up there! But we’re finally back in business, and I like it. Things are about to get a whooole lot busier. (Have mentioned that my Y has 18,000 members? Yeah. That’s just my branch. And there are 19 other branches here in Charlotte. Take a moment to let that sink in…)

-New things on the career/home front! Ryan and I spent a lot of time this past weekend talking about our future and what’s in store, and I could not be more excited. One of the things I love about Ryan is that he instills in me the desire to always want to do my best…to be my “best self.” Ever since I met Ryan, I’ve found myself reevaluating my place in life, and whether or not the things I am doing at the time line up with where I want to be and where I envision myself going. Ryan supported me 100% when I was denied from UNC in April 2010 (this was the first time I applied for the MPH- PHLP distance program – the program I am in today, thankyouverymuch). He let me cry on his shoulder, and he listened to me babble about a Crazy-Outta-Left-Field “Plan B. ” After talking through logistics, he supported me when I decided I wanted to actually go for this “Plan B.” He stayed up all night  with me, helping me finish my personal statement and application. As you all know by know, my Crazy-Outta-Left-Field “Plan B” turned into my reality, and has brought me to where I am today.

IMG_3538

And that reality? Would be TarHeel Country.

Needless to say, the urge to reevaluate has hit me again. Ever since I returned from my UNC orientation, I’ve been itching for something. Something more. I left there feeling inspired, and that feeling has never left — it’s only grown. What that is? I have no idea. (Okay, so maybe I have a few…). This past weekend, Ryan and I took some steps to get the ball rollin’. And I’m excited for where things are headed.

IMG_1147

These two = my biggest fans

-Fall. For obvious reasons. Summer was great (it always is!) but hot damn, y’all. There were times homegirl thought she was going to melt away. Now that the weather is finally getting cooler and less humid (eh, it’s all relative), I’m excited to spend more time outside during the middle of the afternoon…and not feel like I’m going to die. Plus, Fall is a time for apple-picking, pumpkin patches, and hay-rides… and haunted cornfield mazes(!!!!). C’mon. You know you love that stuff, too.

http://take5photoblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Pumpkin-Patch1.jpg

Take me to the land-o-pumpkins, por favor

-Oh, and let’s not forget that the Holidays are just around the corner! I know there’s a whole army of people who hate how stores usher in Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations so early, and sure…it baffles me, too. Truly, it does. But I really don’t mind it too much.

http://www.dionlabel.com/tl_files/dion/images/Ashley's%20Blog/Christmas%20Balls.jpg

Those sleigh-bells are a ringing...

In all honesty, I actually kind of like the reminder that the festive season is right around the corner. And I may or may not have already listened to some Christmas tunes on my ipod (Nsync’s Happy Holidays is a classic. As is Mariah Carey).  I absolute *love* the Holidays, so the premature décor floating around the stores makes my inner-child want to jump and prance around.

http://static.flickr.com/225/493679339_69af9e4bf4.jpg

Just like this.

-It’s RACE season!!!! Oh yesssssss. That’s right, people. I have just under 2 more months until my second marathon (read: only 8 weeks are left!). Training is going super, super well. I’m about 6 weeks in, and have had zero issues whatsoever (knock on 1000 pieces of wood). I think all of the strength-training and stretching I’ve done over the summer has really helped my muscles stay strong and balanced. And I’m sure all of the foam rolling I’m doing at the Y has something to do with it, too. I’m trying to make room in my schedule to cash in a Groupon I bought a few months back for some hot yoga, so I’m excited to challenge my flexibility even more.

Oh, and I have my eye on a couple of half marathons for September and October, so weather depending, I’ll be getting in some more race experience. I’m hoping to run the Davidson Run For the Green next weekend to knock out 13 of my 18 miles I have on tap (and do the extra 5 as a warm-up or cool-down). I ran this race 3 years ago as my first race ever, so it’d be really neat to come full circle and run it again. The other half marathon I have my eye on is the old “DowdYRun.”  This is the race that my YMCA used to put on for the past 8 or so years, however…this year, we’ve handed the reigns over to Run For Your Life. They’ve renamed it Rocktoberfest (Caitlin actually just signed up for it!), but the Y is still the main sponsor. This race is 2 weeks out from my marathon, and my training plan calls for a 13 mile longrun that weekend. I figure since I’m supposed to run 13 miles that weekend anyway, why not get a medal for it? Plus, I gotta represent the Y Smile with tongue out.

Needless to say, I won’t be signing up for these races until a few days before. Sure, they’re smaller races, but race fees do add up… and if the weather isn’t going to be pleasant, well, I’d rather get my miles in on a day that has nice weather. Plus, I already know what it’s like to run a marathon in the rain, so I’m not worried about getting “race experience” in a downpour. Been there, done that.

IMG_0631

and I can't wait to do it again :)

-New things on the blogfront. I’m hoping to give this baby a little facelift, and create a few new pages. (Anyone know of a ballin’ yet affordable go-to-person for a new header, and maybe some of those button things I’ve been seeing all over? I’m clueless, and need some direction!).

What kinds of things are you excited for this Fall? Do you ever sit back and “evaluate” where you are vs. where you want to be in regards to life? What action steps do you take to make changes? Any races on your radar? And most importantly, what is your stance on early Holiday decor? :P
